Target, Staples, Kroger leading retailers in EPA green buildings challenge
Green Retail Decisions
Target, Staples and Kroger were recognized as the top retail green building developers by the Environmental Protection Agency's Energy Star Certification Nation campaign and challenge. More than 350 organizations participated in Certification Nation as part of the 15th anniversary of Energy Star, which recognized organizations that certified buildings by Dec. 12. Special recognition was given to companies that certified at least five buildings during the anniversary year, in addition to other higher levels of achievement and recognition.

Meijer opens Skechers' largest in-store shop in US

Meijer is continuing to up its fashion game with the opening of a Skechers shop in one of its Grand Rapids, Michigan, stores. The 804-square-foot Skechers concept shop is the largest the footwear company has created with a U.S. retailer partner, Rick Graham, Skechers senior vice president of domestic sales, told MLive and The Grand Rapids Press.

Amazon has opened its first brick-and-mortar location: Amazon@Purdue launched Feb. 3 on the campus of Purdue University, with an open-layout design accented with the cheery color of Amazon's flagship orange. Amazon and the other e-commerce companies that have bridged the brick-and-mortar gap are reinventing the customer experience with smaller, more intimate spaces, focusing on delivering a special experience in addition to displaying products.

Levi Strauss & Co. has saved 1 billion liters of water since 2011 through its Water. This company announcement coincides with the release of LS&Co's new product lifecycle assessment, an update on the company's 2007 study that examined the environmental impact of its products. The new study analyzed the complete product lifecycle, probing deeper into the environmental impacts of cotton in key growing regions, apparel production and distribution in a range of locations, and consumer washing and drying habits in key markets.

Retailers urge Congress to boost consumer protections in data breaches
Los Angeles Times
The world's largest retail trade group urged Congress to tighten consumer protections for data breaches that have plagued retailers and other companies in recent years. In testimony before a congressional subcommittee on technology, David French of the National Retail Federation said the government should expand liability protection for people using debit cards, pass a nationwide notification law that will inform all parties handling sensitive data in the event of a breach, and boost the prosecution of cybercriminals.
