Best Buy busts a move

Electronics retailer Best Buy got a jolt after the company beat estimates for its fourth quarter with a 37 percent year-over-year jump in profits. The Richfield, Minn.-based retailer said it earned $799 million, or $1.82 per share, compared with $570 million, or $1.35 per share in the fourth quarter of 2009. Sales for the period ending Feb. 27 jumped 12 percent to $16.6 billion. Sales at stores open at least one year, a key measure of retail performance, gained 7 percent in the quarter. More

Kohl's earns EPA award for green purchasing

Kohl's Department Stores announced that the company has received a Gold Achievement Award for Green Purchasing from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's WasteWise Partnership. The award recognizes the company’s purchase and use of recycled and environmentally responsible materials throughout its operations. Kohl's received the award on March 22, at the annual WasteWise awards ceremony in Arlington, Va. More

Zale looking to Plan B for cash infusion

Zale Corp.'s plea for cash has attracted "at least a dozen serious proposals," and the board is reviewing a handful of offers, with plans to select one by late April, according to sources close to the situation. The Irving, Texas-based jewelry retailer's board has rejected a proposal from Apollo Management LP that included the sale of its 679 Piercing Pagoda mall-based jewelry kiosks and its 212 Canadian stores. That proposal, led by former Zale chief executive Robert DiNicola, had the support of founding family member Donald Zale. More

Gap enters Australian market with Melbourne franchise

Gap Inc., the operator of more than 3,100 clothing stores, will start a push into the Australian retail market with a franchise in Melbourne this year. The retailer will work with Brand Republic Pty Ltd., a unit of Busby Holdings Australia Pty Ltd., to establish franchises in the country, San Francisco-based Gap said in a statement. Sydney will get a store in 2011, with more locations to follow, said Stefan Laban, vice president of Gap's strategic alliances division. More

A new Costco/Lowe's-anchored retail center in Los Angeles achieves 40 percent in water savings, compared to the baseline, said Vanessa Delgado of Primestor Development, which was involved in building the 343,000-square-foot center. The Plaza Pacoima center, which upon completion will seek a LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, is about 13.9 percent more efficient in electricity use than the baseline for similar facilities, which translates to a 16.6 percent cost savings, according to the LEED compliance documents. More
