Shoppers give retailers a 9 percent spring in their sales
The Dallas Morning News    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The return of the recession-weary shopper might not inspire a new mall zombie movie, but it's enough for one retailing CEO to say consumers have "come back from the dead." U.S. chain store sales rose 9 percent in March from a year earlier, recording the strongest monthly increase since 1999 as Americans decided it was time to replace worn collars, khakis, T-shirts and sun dresses. That buying spree sent same-store sales for most major retailers soaring last month as shoppers even paid full price for spring merchandise. Several retailers responded by raising first-quarter profit outlooks. More

Vacancy rates at U.S. shopping centers and malls rose to the highest levels in at least 10 years in the first quarter, accompanied by a drop in rents that wiped out years of growth, research firm Reis said, adding that no improvement was likely soon. "Until we see stabilization and recovery take root in both consumer spending and business spending and employment, we do not foresee a recovery in the retail property sector until late 2012 at the earliest," Victor Calanog, Reis director of research, told Reuters. The Columbus Dispatch    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Life for those who own and lease malls and other retail spaces improved in March for the first time in nearly three years, according to the International Council of Shopping Centers. The group said that its business barometer, a number based on executive surveys, was 52.6 percent last month, the first time it's been above 50, or in positive territory, since July 2007. Readings below 50 percent indicate "deterioration" in the retail real-estate industry. More
