Smart building technology spending projected to triple by 2018

A report released by IDC Energy Insights, Global Smart Buildings Forecast 2013–2018, projects spending in the global smart building technology market to grow from $6.3 billion in 2013 to $21.9 billion in 2018, representing a 28.4 percent compound annual growth rate. Smart building technology is closely linked to sustainability, for which there is increasingly broad market awareness, and is also linked to business values aimed to deploy energy and cost saving solutions.

Family Dollar sales rise ahead of Dollar Tree merger

Family Dollar reported earnings largely in line with estimates for its fiscal second quarter, ahead of its impending merger with Dollar Tree. The $8.5 billion takeover by smaller rival Dollar Tree is expected to close in May, but is still awaiting final regulatory approval.

Retailer Party City seeks $2 billion valuation in IPO

Party City Holdco Inc, the largest U.S. party goods retailer, is expected to be valued at nearly $2 billion in its initial public offering, the first by a U.S. retailer this year. The company, backed by buyout firm Thomas H. Lee Partners LP, operates 900 party superstores in the United States and Canada that sell party supplies including paper and plastic tableware, metallic and latex balloons and gifts for everyday.

Uniqlo fast tracks American expansion

Japanese fast fashion retailer Uniqlo is marching fast on its expansion track in the US with announcement of new store openings in the East and West Coasts and in the Central Region. As part of the brand's East and West Coast expansion, its first store will come up in the DC Metro area at Tyson's Corner Center where it will occupy approximately 10,000 feet of space.

Upscale Los Angeles mall woos rich customers from China

The Beverly Center may tout itself as "Southern California's premiere fashion destination," but the mall has been making a major effort to appeal to wealthy customers from China. On Feb. 19, the start of the Lunar New Year, Los Angeles' upscale mall, The Beverly Center, staged an elaborate celebration marking the "Year of the Sheep." Los Angeles Laker Jeremy Lin, one of the most famous Chinese-American athletes, participated by placing his wish on a "Wishing Tree," adorned with the traditional red envelopes for good luck.
