How a 'buildings-first' approach can improve energy management
GreenBiz    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
When you're talking about the energy management software market, it's not uncommon to hear words like "confusing" and "nascent" as common observations. But previous attempts to define the EMS market have focused heavily on summarizing various usage scenarios and software features to guide purchasers' decisions. A better approach starts with classifying your buildings and then matching a solution to fit that particular portfolio and maximize return. More

Like retailers of past, Best Buy will have to adapt to survive
MinnPost    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Like retailers of past, Best Buy will have to adapt to survive. Best Buy CEO Brian Dunn's highly publicized departure has prompted a flood of speculation about the future of the company — and about the end of retailing as we know it. Although Best Buy's fall — reporting declines in same-store sales in six of the past seven quarters — may seem abrupt, even stunning, the company and other brick-and-mortar chains are facing the same question that mass retailers faced over the last 100 years: How do they evolve from their beginnings into something new that meets today's needs and challenges? Wal-Mart Canada beefs up for retailers' food fight
The Globe and Mail    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Wal-Mart Canada Corp. is pushing aggressively into food as it steals business from grocery rivals, having almost doubled its share of the fresh-food market in the past two years. U.S.-based Wal-Mart Stores Inc., which arrived in Canada in 1994, started to add massive supercenters with full fresh-food offerings in November 2006, taking a bite out of business from other supermarkets and retailers. Big-box retailers shifting focus to 'small-box' stores
Marketwire via MarketWatch    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Big-box retail came alive in 1962 when Wal-Mart, K-Mart and Target all opened their first stores. After nearly 50 years of kicking mom and pop shops to the curb, big-box retailers' era of dominance may finally be coming to an end. Five Star Equities examines the outlook for companies in the Services Sector and provides equity research on Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. and Target Corporation. More

Retailers, can you hear us now?
Forbes    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A well-known and documented fact is that the retail market in North America is a zero sum game. The National Retail Federation projects that U.S. retail sales will grow 3.4 percent in 2012. The retail market is not growing substantially due to population explosion or technology or productivity enhancements on a broad level. One retailer or manufacturer's gain is another's loss. So, how do you win? You win by expanding into new markets or categories, or by growing comparable store sales in existing categories, or both. More

Carrefour cites 'difficult' retail environment as sales rise
Bloomberg    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Carrefour, the world's second-largest retailer, reported a 1.5 percent increase in first-quarter sales as Latin American demand and new stores in Asia more than made up for declines in southern Europe. Revenue rose to $29.6 billion, the Boulogne-Billancourt, France-based company said in a statement. Sales at stores open a year or more fell 0.1 percent, excluding currency moves and gasoline. More

Why Wal-Mart wants more consumer pressure for sustainability
GreenBiz    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Selling green products can be complicated: When it comes to environmental consciousness, what consumers say they want doesn't always match up with what they actually buy. In a free webcast, speakers from Walmart, Lenovo and sustainability consultancy UL Environment discussed what they're doing to try to bridge that gap. One issue is a difference between how consumers and companies think — and talk — about sustainable products. More

What trends portend
Stores.org    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
While the recession may have influenced people to postpone some of life's happier moments — like getting married or having a baby — the wait will soon be over. Generation Y — several million people larger than the Baby Boomers — is just about to reach maturity, and while Boomers are changing the face of retirement, they aren't the only demographic that's shifting. Every other generation has a part to play. Here are seven trends that retailers should pay attention to. More

Long road ahead for India's malls to go green
LiveMint    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
An average shopping mall in India that occupies an area of 100,000 square feet to 500,000 square feet, consumes between 120,000 liters and 600,000 liters of water a day. It also consumes roughly 250 kilowatts of power per square meter in a year. Ideally, a commercial structure of this scale should consume about 30 to 40 percent less power and water, according to conservation experts. While Indian retailers are only just starting to think green, major retail chains across the world have already put their sustainable strategies in place. More

Meccas of shopping try hand at being misers of energy
The New York Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
For most people, talking about commercial air filters is a great way to end a conversation. To Charlie Brantl and Bob Devine, it is an invitation to an hour-long discussion. They are engineers, in charge of finding ways to conserve energy and reduce waste at the Mall of America south of Minneapolis, the country's largest shopping and entertainment complex. And they talk excitedly about everything related to saving energy, including skylights, low-flush toilets and commercial air filters. More
