March retail sales indicate confident, but cautious consumer

From clothing and electronics to home furnishings and building materials, retail sales in March increased across the board for the ninth straight month. According to the National Retail Federation, retail industry sales (which exclude automobiles, gas stations, and restaurants) for March increased 0.6 percent seasonally adjusted from February and 3.9 percent unadjusted year over year. Best Buy plans to open hundreds of smaller mobile stores and expand online and in China in an effort to be more competitive as consumers increasingly shop online. The largest U.S. electronics retailer plans to shrink square footage at big-box stores by 10 percent over the next three to five years, a move that Best Buy said will eventually save it $70 million to $80 million annually. Its complete return is still a year away, but owners of the Opry Mills mall in Nashville, Tenn., say shoppers will finally see repairs resume at the 1.2-million-square-foot shopping mecca shuttered since last spring’s floods amid a complex insurance squabble. Flood-damaged Opry Mills will reopen in spring 2012 with some new tenants, including the Coach Factory Store, Under Armour Factory House and The Lego Store. More
