Low-cost wireless meter challenge
U.S. Department of Energy
Following the model of the U.S. Department of Energy's Better Buildings Alliance Rooftop Unit Challenge, DOE's Better Buildings Alliance Technology Solutions Team will soon be issuing the Low-cost Wireless Meter Challenge to industry to produce a cost-effective, wireless metering system capable of electrical energy measurement at various locations in a building and wireless communication to a remote data collection point within the building complex. The primary goal of the program is to catalyze the development of low cost panel-level metering solutions. Selected devices may, in some cases, also be applicable to a whole-building application, but that application is outside the scope of this challenge. In developing the specifications for this challenge, DOE considered input from federal agencies and members of the Better Buildings Alliance.

Canadian policymakers weigh in on arrival of big US retailers
The Wall Street Journal
It's no longer just shoppers chattering about the arrival in Canada of big U.S. retailers; policymakers are now weighing in as well. Smart building strategy: Tackle behavior first, technology second
It's no secret that technology changes behavior, and that’s likely to be just as true with buildings as it is with, say, mobile devices. But while we often think of the latest technology as a way to improve building functions, we usually fail to fully consider how technology might alter the way people use those buildings. In other words, we tend to overvalue the role of the technology and undervalue the resulting re-engineering of the operational processes. And those process changes, rather than the technology itself, actually can have the biggest impact on costs, effectiveness and efficiency.

It remains to be seen whether Fishers' new rules for mobile businesses will increase food truck traffic in the Hamilton County town — and what impact their arrival could have on established restaurants.
