The Professional Retail Store Maintenance Association (PRSM), the authority on retail, multi-site facilities management, honored its 2012 Annual Award recipients. The awards ceremony was held in conjunction with the PRSM2012
National Conference morning keynote session today (April 20) at the Hilton Anaheim Hotel in Anaheim, Calif. The professionals honored are first nominated by their peers for recognition, and then a committee of past winners determines award recipients. "The 2012 PRSM Awards Program is the most prestigious recognition a member can achieve," said Paul Walsh, 2012-2013 president of the PRSM Board of Directors.

Wal-Mart 'on track' to end landfill waste by 2025

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. said that it is on track to meet many of its goals for making its operations more environmentally sustainable, but it fell short of some benchmarks. Wal-Mart CEO Mike Duke said in June that environmental sustainability is one of the company's top five priorities. Even small improvements in Wal-Mart's operations can make a big difference because of the massive scale of its retail outlets and global supply chain.

Sears Holdings Corp. said that it completed the $270 million sale of 11 full-line Sears store locations to General Growth Properties. Sears said the stores will continue to operate as Sears locations into 2013 or 2014, with final closing dates to be announced later this year. The stores are in Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah and Washington.

Westfield Group will sell eight malls in the U.S. for $1.15 billion, using the funds to repay debt and invest in businesses offering higher returns. The Sydney-based company will sell seven of the properties, which are among its “non-core” assets, to Barry Sternlicht's Starwood Capital Group LLC for $1 billion, and another property to an undisclosed buyer for $147 million.

The Bloomberg Consumer Comfort Index was minus 31.4 in the period ended April 15, compared with minus 32.8 over the previous seven days. The reading equaled that from two weeks earlier as the best since March 2008. Nonetheless, the monthly expectations measure fell from a one-year high, showing concern remains that too many Americans are still unemployed.

The Houston-based retailer operates 249 outlets in 38 states targeting women age 18-35. It eventually plans to have 900 stores throughout the U.S. About half of its revenue comes from clothing sales, with the rest coming from jewelry, accessories and gifts.
