Kohl's expands supply chain sustainability commitments

Kohl's Department Stores has expanded its commitment to supply chain sustainability in 2012 to include analysis of 50 private brand vendors, as well as the company's top 325 national brand vendors, which represents approximately 90 percent of the company's merchandise spend. The company also surveyed 38 non-merchandise business partners in the areas of transportation and consumables, according to its newly released 2012 corporate social responsibility report.

Staples unveils solar power installation at Framingham, Mass., HQ
The Boston Globe
Office supply giant Staples Inc. has just unveiled a solar power installation at its Framingham, Mass., headquarters. Company officials said they worked with SunEdison on a project that resulted in a 685 kilowatt solar installation on the 650,000 square-foot office building that serves as Staples’ headquarters. According to Staples, this is its 37th solar array.

The Senate voted overwhelmingly to approve President Barack Obama's nominee for top White House budget expert, bringing a woman into a top post in an administration that critics say has been dominated by men. Former Walmart Foundation President Sylvia Mathews Burwell was confirmed as director of the Office of Management and Budget by a vote of 96-0, a quick, bipartisan vote of support by a Senate that has strongly objected to several key White House nominations, including the secretary of Defense.

Outlet mall with fashion ambition rises near Chicago

A new outlet mall under construction in Rosemont, Ill — the first enclosed mall to be built in the Chicago area in over a decade — is both a departure for the outlet industry and a major new attraction for this close-in Chicago suburb long known as a convention and business hub. The $250 million mall, Fashion Outlets of Chicago, is scheduled to open this summer. The two-level, 530,000-square-foot center is being co-developed by AWE Talisman, a Florida-based company that also owns outlet centers in Las Vegas and Santa Fe, N.M., and the Macerich Company of Santa Monica, Calif.

Jones Group slashes number of U.S. stores, shares rise
Jones Group Inc., the fashion company that owns retail chains Nine West and Jones New York, said it will close about 170 underperforming U.S. stores by mid-2014 and cut its workforce by about 8 percent in a bid to revive profits. Shares of the company rose 2.7 percent to $13.97 on the New York Stock Exchange after it announced the cuts, which it said would cost it about $40 million to $60 million over the next 15 months.

Century theaters in San Jose, Calif., could give way to shopping mall, offices and homes

A big new shopping center, office towers and residences could replace several of the Century movie theaters near the Winchester Mystery House in San Jose under a plan to lease the property, realty agents said. The site being eyed for redevelopment includes the Century theaters on Winchester Boulevard near Interstate 280. The theaters' domes are a familiar sight in the area, and the theaters have over the decades played many blockbuster films.

Specialty Sports Venture, the retail division of Vail Resorts Inc., announced the acquisition of Hoigaard's, an outdoor-equipment and apparel store. Located in St. Louis Park, Minn., outside of Minneapolis, the 20,000-square-foot store is a specialty provider of snow-sports equipment. It features equipment and clothing for skiers and snowboarders as well as Nordic gear during the winter months. In the summer, it sells bikes, and paddle-sports and camping gear.
