Jewelry will be a popular gift option this Mother's Day, with 31.2 percent of celebrants planning to buy mothers silver, gold or diamonds, up 19 percent from last year, according to a recent survey. Total spending on jewelry is expected to reach $3.0 billion. According to NRF's 2011 Mother's Day Consumer Intentions and Actions survey, the average person celebrating the holiday is expected to spend $140.73 on gifts, up from $126.90 last year, and a return to 2008 spending levels. Total spending by adults age 18 and older is expected to reach $16.3 billion. More

A survey by Colliers International, canvassing 233 of the 1,259 stores closed by the prominent failures of four national big-box retailers in 2008 and 2009, found that 51 percent of those 233 sites remained vacant as of this month. The rest were leased for rents that averaged 17.9 percent less than those paid by the previous retail tenants. More

There were 3,400 more full-time U.K. retail jobs in the first quarter of 2011, compared to the same three months last year, according to new research. The Retail Employment Monitor from the British Retail Consortium and law firm Bond Pearce found that the number of retail outlets grew by 5.3 per cent during the same period. More

Walgreens has inked a deal to acquire 10 Carle RxExpress pharmacies from The Carle Foundation, an integrated network of health care services based in East Central Illinois. The drug store chain said it plans to continue operating six of the acquired pharmacies and close three locations, whereby prescription files and inventory will be transferred to nearby Walgreens pharmacies.
