After paying preferred dividends, OfficeMax said profit available to common shareholders rose to $24.8 million, or 29 cents per share, from $13.1 million, or 17 cents per share, in the year-ago quarter. Adjusted profit, which removes charges for severance and store closures in the U.S. and Mexico and a benefit related to tax distributions, came to 39 cents per share. More

Big Lots Inc. is welcoming a step-up in consumer spending, feeling that its deep discount approach will resonate even more. "We're definitely a fan of an improving economic environment," said Big Lots Chief Financial Officer Joe Cooper. The road is clearer to open more upscale outlets, merchandise is still easy to come by and demand goes up, Cooper said during a retail conference held by Barclays Capital. Big Lots and other lower-end retailers benefited during the recession as consumers traded down. The big question is how their business will fare when the economy recovers. Sam's Club has become one of the first retailers in the country to set up a significant number of micro wind turbines at one of its stores. The warehouse club has installed 17 machines provided by Massachusetts company DeerPath Energy at its store in Palmdale, Calif. The site is in a particularly windy location, and will showcase the technology before it more wind turbines are installed at other stores. More

Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. announced that they received a $1 million grant from the Pennsylvania Energy Development Authority for the implementation of hydrogen fuel cell-powered material handling equipment (pallet jacks and reach trucks) at their Retail Service Center in Pottsville, Pennsylvania. The grant will offset a portion of the costs associated with the installation of an on-site hydrogen infrastructure, which includes an outdoor hydrogen storage tank and indoor fueling dispensers. JCPenney and Sears stores are among 14 commercial buildings that are competing in the first national energy efficiency contest sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The building that trims the most kilowatt hours will be declared the winner in October 2010. The EPA received nearly 200 applications and selected 14 finalists to be judged on their energy performance from Sept. 1, 2009 to Aug. 31, 2010. More
