Walmart is betting big on China

Giant U.S. retailer Walmart Stores Inc. plans to expand its footprint in China by nearly a third by opening 115 new stores by 2017, the firm's chief executive said, in a renewed push to lure China's grocery shoppers despite slowing growth. "Our aim is to become an integral part of China’s economy," Chief Executive Doug McMillon said at a news conference in Beijing. "China is a top priority."

Mall of America owner may be eyeing Hawaii for possible mega-mall project

Cindy Clark, a former executive for Triple Five Worldwide Group of Cos. who handled leasing deals for the company’s malls and other properties, told PBN that she has reached out to her former company to see if they could possibly do a project in Hawaii.

Kroger expands in Central Indiana to create 3,400-plus jobs
The Associated Press via ABC News
Kroger will build 11 new stores and expand or remodel 22 others in a $464.6 million central Indiana expansion that will create 3,440 permanent jobs, the retailer announced. A four-year strategic plan for the nine-county Indianapolis area began quietly last year and includes building seven Kroger Marketplace stores in Fishers, Franklin and Indianapolis. Kroger Marketplaces are the Cincinnati-based retailer's largest outlets at about 125,000 square feet and include cafes, baby stores and apparel shops. The seven stores are forecast to cost $141 million and create 1,530 jobs.

Giant Eagle commits to reducing water consumption
Green Retail Decisions
Giant Eagle Inc. has committed to reduce water consumption by 5 percent by July 2017, which is expected to conserve millions of gallons of water. The multi-format food, fuel and pharmacy retailer also operates 12 LEED-certified retail locations, has converted nearly half of its distribution fleet to CNG-powered vehicles and recycles more than 700 tons of plastic bags annually, the company said in a statement.

Refrigerant reclamation to dramatically reduce GHG emissions

JCPenney names West as new CMO

JCPenney Company Inc. has named one of its board members as its next EVP and chief marketing officer. The company said that Mary Beth West, a highly accomplished consumer marketing executive, will join the company's executive leadership team as executive vice president and chief customer and marketing officer effective June 1. She will be stepping down from her position on its Board of Directors to assume this new role.
