Kohl's exceeds recycling and Energy Star store certification goals

Kohl's Department Stores exceeded its goal to achieve Energy Star certification for 800 stores two years ahead of schedule and now has 383 LEED-certified buildings, according to the retailer’s 2013 corporate social responsibility report.In total, Kohl's added 69 Energy Star certified stores in 2013, bringing its total to 821. “These efforts save money and minimize our carbon footprint with benefits that can be seen both locally and globally,” said Kevin Mansell chairman, president and CEO.

Columbia Sportswear to acquire yoga brand PrAna for $190 million
Bloomberg
Columbia Sportswear Co., a maker of jackets and other outerwear, agreed to acquire PrAna Living LLC for $190 million, adding yoga and rock-climbing clothing that’s designed to be environmentally sustainable. Columbia is buying the brand from Steelpoint Capital Partners and other investors in a cash transaction, according to a statement.

Have your roofs got you covered?

Roofs protect our facilities and the assets they hold from punishing elements such as wind, rain, hail, sleet, snow and excessive heat. Although they appear to quietly endure extreme conditions, they actually may be trying to communicate their need for help. Those extreme conditions contribute to deterioration, which increases the risk of exposure beneath their covering. Given the long, harsh winter that much of the nation just endured, it is time to inspect and protect our roofs from further damage while repairing what those cruel elements have chipped away over the winter months.

New outlet shopping mall opening in Niagara-on-the-Lake
Toronto Star
Toronto bargain hunters and visitors to Niagara will soon have a new reason — beyond the drop in value of the dollar — to shop in Canada. The Outlet Collection at Niagara, located beside the QEW, less than 20 kilometres from the U.S. border, is slated to open May 15, featuring 102 retailers including some Canadian firsts.

Fat Face plans $186 million IPO as retailers sell stock

Fat Face Group Ltd., the British ski and sportswear chain, plans to offer shares in an initial public offering, joining U.K. retailers such as Pets at Home Group Plc and Poundland Group Plc entering the stock market this year. The offering to institutional investors will raise as much as 110 million pounds ($186 million), the Hampshire, England-based company said in a statement.

Michaels stays ahead of bad weather in 4th quarter

Although bad weather hurt some retailers during the crucial fourth quarter, it didn't stop Michaels Stores from seeing comparable store sales increase 4.6 percent for the period ended Feb. 1. Comparable store sales were driven by a 4.2 percent increase in the company's average ticket and a 0.5 percent increase in transactions, partially offset by a 10 basis point impact from deferred custom framing revenue.

Aeropostale will cut 100 jobs, shut mall-based P.S. stores

Aeropostale Inc., a retail chain that sells teen and children’s apparel, plans to cut about 100 jobs and shut mall-based locations of its P.S. kids-focused stores as part of a comeback effort. The company will be closing about 125 of its P.S. locations in shopping malls, a response to changing buying patterns by moms, according to a statement.
