Bloomberg    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Consumer spending in the U.S. climbed in March after the biggest gain since August 2009, and incomes picked up, indicating the biggest part of the economy will help sustain the expansion. Household purchases, which account for about 70 percent of the economy, increased 0.3 percent, after a revised 0.9 percent gain the prior month that was stronger than first reported, Commerce Department figures showed today in Washington. Oh, Canada
Stores Magazine    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
C anada may not seem the most exotic or exciting location to expand internationally — but it may be the most logical. The country weathered the global economic downturn stronger than most and, according to a report by Collier International, per capita retail spending surpassed that of the United States last year. It's no wonder, then, that many U.S. retailers are looking to our neighbors to the north. More

Happy Birthday retail! Walmart, Target, Kmart, Kohl's turn 50
Forbes    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Walmart, Target, Kmart and Kohl's are all celebrating a milestone 50th anniversary this year. It's hard to believe that all four were founded in the same year, but combined these stores changed the way America shops. Happy Birthday to modern retail. Three of the four began as department store offshoots. Target sprang from Minnesota's Dayton's and Kmart from Detroit-based S.S. Kresge. Both were developed as formats to reach shoppers beyond their core businesses. Kohl's started as a department store when the Wisconsin based supermarket chain branched out into a new format from the Kohl family. More

10,000 and counting: Dollar General goes national
Retailing Today Insights    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The path to prosperity in the mass market begins with a lean expense structure for operators who rely on low prices as a foundational aspect of their value proposition. In Dollar General's case, it means operating a network of 10,000 stores as efficiently as possible to offer attractive prices to shoppers and compelling returns for investors. Expenses as a percent of sales totaled 21.66 percent at Dollar General last year, but with a gross margin rate of 31.77 percent, the company was able to achieve an operating margin of 10.07 percent. Bright new look for older mall
Minneapolis Star Tribune    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Many shopping malls built in the 1970s still bear decorative, albeit dated, remnants of eras past. For Maplewood Mall Saint Paul, Minn., it was the mirrored columns that were probably spiffy back in the day but now seem more appropriate for an aging nightclub. The once-glittering columns now are gone — stripped to their original brick facing and encased in cherry-wood molding during a recent renovation of the 38-year-old shopping center in the eastern suburbs. Bigger crowds at the mall, and just wait until Mother's Day
CNBC    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
At the end of last year, mall operators and retailers were wondering where all the people were. Despite higher retail sales, foot traffic at the stores declined in the final months of 2011, according to ShopperTrak, the world's largest provider of people-counting services for retailers and malls. The trend reflected an increase in purchases made online and on mobile devices as well as consumers consolidating store trips in the face of higher gasoline prices. More
