Who can best survive the 'clicks versus bricks' era?
CNBC
The e-commerce boom is a worrying headwind for retailers and shopping mall operators the world over, but BNP Paribas says some shopping hubs are weathering the risks better than others. "Our view is that the threat of e-commerce is inevitable but malls that embrace this trend will remain highly relevant," said Wee Liat Lee, head of property research at BNP Paribas.

The Future of Work verification the right information in the right place at the right time
PRSM Magazine
In the March/April PRSM Magazine article, The Future of Work Verification, Mike Pedersen, vice president, National Account Operations, Divisions Maintenance Group, explained why, "No matter which way you slice it, current and emerging technologies will change the way work verification is handled for retail facilities services." Pedersen identified three questions to help retailers figure out if they need a better verification program. First, when was the technician on site and for how long? Second, did the vendor deliver the scope of work and third, am I being billed correctly? If your existing program isn't producing this information check out Pedersen's article here.

Behind the outlet-mall boom: bargain hunters, foreign shoppers
The Orange County Register
They are no longer shoved into far-flung corners, nor are they a season behind on the fashion calendar. Outlet malls, once the final destinations for clothing cast-offs, are where deal seekers come to find the latest designs, or close to it, for less. And shoppers are driving significantly fewer miles to get there.

Why test new fire alarm systems?
FacilitiesNet
Fire alarm systems are supposed to be certified by the installer to be 100 percent complete per plans and specifications, fully functional, and ready for use prior to the building being issued an occupancy permit. Yet a lot of building permits are issued based upon random testing or a system printout indicating that all devices are functioning rather than a thorough examination.

US retailers benefit from warmer April as sales bounce back
Reuters
Spring was in full swing for some U.S. retailers, with shoppers spending again in April after the weather warmed up. A number of large U.S. retailers, including Costco Wholesale Corp and Victoria's Secret parent L Brands Inc, reported April comparable sales above expectations, helped in part by a later Easter that pushed sales from March, and the end of a harsh winter that had kept many shoppers at home.

Walmart is transforming into a go-green leader
By Danielle Wegert
A major issue for corporations today is sustainability and reducing impact on the environment. Many national and international corporations are known for being sustainable and environmentally friendly, including Hewlett-Packard, Dell, Ikea and Johnson & Johnson. But one company focusing on sustainability may surprise you: Walmart. The world's largest retailer is taking several steps to reduce its impact on the environment, and Walmart is doing it behind the scenes without trying to get significant recognition.

Responding to active shooter situations
STORES
After more than a decade of anti-terrorist preparation — including increased training, enhanced surveillance and unprecedented cooperation with law enforcement authorities — the retail industry is responding to a different kind of threat: the lone gunman. It's not an industry-specific threat: Gunmen have opened fire in schools, movie theaters and airports. But the stream of anonymous shoppers bustling in and out of stores seems to hold a special attraction.

The HVAC factor: Keeping cool, safely
Today's Facility Manager
It may seem like a lot of hot air, but incorporating air movement into a facility provides numerous benefits that can easily be overlooked. The Center for the Built Environment at the University of California, Berkeley, has found temperature and air quality to affect productivity directly. And the narrow temperature and comfort range at which people are most productive is largely dependent on adequate ventilation and air circulation. Paired with occupant comfort is the issue of employee safety in workplace settings.
