Ikea to test retail concept at new location opening in Ontario

Ikea Canada is expanding on a new scale. The world's largest furniture maker will open its smallest retail location in Canada in London, Ontario. The 20,000-square-foot pick-up centre will feature a limited number of items for purchase and immediate takeaway and 10 tablets on site for customers to browse and buy on www.IKEA.com. It will offer services including merchandise pick-up, home delivery, assembly, planning, returns and exchanges and online sales support, according to a company release.

RadioShack name goes to Standard General for $26.2 million

The dismantling of RadioShack Corp. grew closer to completion with the auctioning of the 94-year-old electronics retailer's name to hedge fund Standard General LP for $26.2 million. Standard General, which bought hundreds of RadioShack store leases in March, prevailed this week in the bidding for the bankrupt chain's brand name, a trove of customer data and other intellectual property, the hedge fund said.

Numerous retailers and consumer packaged goods companies increasingly are focused on greening their supply chains and freight operations, according to an analysis of recent sustainability reports by the Environmental Defense Fund. Retailers such as Walmart, H&M, Lowes and CVS, as well as recognized brands including Kellogg's, Anheuser-Busch, Apple, Adidas, General Mills and Hershey’s, are highly focused on making their transportation and freight systems more sustainable, according to a report written by Jason Mathers posted on the Environmental Defense Fund blog.

EU sets the bar higher on HFC phasedown

The European Union likes to think of itself as something of a pacesetter when it comes to protecting the environment, and it clearly sees its F-Gas Regulation as demonstrating leadership to the rest of the world in the area of refrigerant controls. In that context, it was perhaps no surprise that the European Commission recently seized the opportunity of the ongoing talks around the Montreal Protocol to propose ambitious targets on HFC phasedown for the rest of the world to follow.

Spending on smart building technology will surpass $17 billion by 2019

Spending on smart buildings will increase from US$7 billion in 2015 to $17.4 billion in 2019, according to new IDC Energy Estimates. Asia/Pacific, North America, and Western Europe will lead smart building spending "due to a combination of policy and business dynamics. Asia's growth will be driven by emerging nations adopting the technology as they construct new buildings. North America's smart building spending will be led by corporations trying to increase their efficiency.

Ikea turns on largest rooftop solar array in Kansas City

Ikea officially plugged in Kansas' largest rooftop solar array atop the recently opened store in Merriam. The 92,000-square-foot solar array consists of a 730.17-kW DC system, comprised of 2,394 panels that will produce approximately 986,800 kWh of electricity annually for the store. Ikea contracted with Chicago-based SoCore Energy for the development, design and installation of the solar power system.

EIA: Size of commercial buildings continues to grow

Increases in the size of commercial buildings have outpaced increases in the number of those buildings over the past decade, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration's Commercial Buildings Energy Consumption Survey. CBECS estimates that there were 5.6 million commercial buildings in the United States in 2012, totaling 87 billion square feet of floor space.

JCPenney names West as new CMO
