Walmart announces 27 solar projects totalling 10.5 MW

Walmart has announced plans to install solar photovoltaic arrays on 27 of its Massachusetts stores as early as August, adding on-site generation to more than half of its outlets in the state. The arrays are in the engineering phase and still require permits, the Boston Globe reports. Once operational, the installations should have a total capacity of 10.5 MW, the paper reports. Each solar plant will provide around 10 to 15 percent of its store's energy. More

Sears to partly spin off Canada business

Sears Holdings Corp. plans to spin off a large part of its stake in Sears Canada Inc., a move that will ratchet up the pressure on the Canadian division to turn around its performance as a slew of U.S. rivals set up shop in Canada. In an unexpected move, U.S. parent Sears Holdings Corp. said that it plans to reduce its stake in the Canadian unit to about 51 percent from 95 percent, and could further lower it after the spinoff. Kohl's, Nordstrom and Target ranked first in their categories in a new survey by Harris Interactive The 2012 Harris Poll EquiTrend study surveyed Americans about brands across several retail segments, revealing which brands prompted them to open their hearts — and consequently — their pocketbooks. While all brands in the department store category dropped in 2012, Kohl's came out on top as the Department Store Brand of the Year. Kohl's edged out J.C. Penney in 2009 and has maintained its lead in the rankings ever since. Kohl's shows the highest overall brand equity score, carried by a strong performance in purchase consideration. More

Golf Town, Canada's largest specialty golf retailer, has signed a deal to acquire U.S-based golf retailer Golfsmith for approximately $97-million in cash. The $6.10 (U.S.) a share Golf Town is paying for Golfsmith represents a 30-percent premium for shareholders of the Texas-based chain based on the closing price of the stock on May 11. More

Apple to use only green power for main data center

Apple Inc. plans to power its main U.S. data center entirely with renewable energy by the end of this year, taking steps to address longstanding environmental concerns about the rapid expansion of high-consuming computer server farms. The maker of the iPhone and iPad said it was buying equipment from SunPower Corp. and start-up Bloom Energy to build two solar array installations in and around Maiden, N.C., near its core data center. Ross profit rises 21 percent in Q1

Ross Stores reported that net income for the first quarter surged 21% to $208.6 million, from $173 million in the same period last year. Sales increased 14 percent to $2.4 billion, and same-store sales rose 9 percent. More

Ann Inc.'s fiscal first-quarter net income rose 5 percent, buoyed by growing sales at Loft, the retailer's more casual, less expensive chain and lower discounting. The women's clothing company, which runs pricier Ann Taylor stores as well as outlets of both its brands, said that it earned $28.7 million, or 58 cents per share, in the three months through April 28. That compares with $27.3 million, or 51 cents per share, a year earlier. More
