EMCOR Group, Inc. announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire USM Services Holdings, Inc., a leading provider of facilities maintenance solutions in North America, from Transfield Services Limited in an all-cash transaction for $255 million, representing $225 million for the base USM business plus $30 million for the net present value of a USM tax benefit. Transfield Services Limited is an Australian-based global provider of operations, asset management and project management services. The transaction is expected to close towards the end of June, subject to customary closing conditions. EMCOR will utilize available cash to finance the acquisition. More

A nascent optimism is taking hold in retail as one merchant after another prepares ambitious expansion programs not seen in several years. Much of the expansion comes from discount retailers. Dollar General plans up to 650 new U.S. stores this year, Family Dollar 300 stores, and Save-A-Lot, 100 stores, according to a new report from the Terranomics division of Atlanta-based ChainLinks Retail Advisors. Target is 'excited' about plans for Canada

Target Corp. says it will spend more than forecast this year on its entry into the Canadian market as it nails down more of the best retail locations sooner than expected. The popular cheap chic department store retailer says it will be able to "clarify" within weeks the number and locations of the first 100 to 150 stores it will open in Canada. More

Sears Holdings Corp., the department- store chain majority-owned by Edward Lampert, swung to a first- quarter loss as shoppers cut back on spending. Greenhouse gas emissions from buildings could be cut by 25 percent using existing technology, the International Energy Agency said. "Technologies such as solar thermal, heat pumps, thermal energy storage and combined heat and power for buildings have the potential to reduce (carbon dioxide) emissions by up to 2 gigatons by 2050 … and save 710 million tons oil equivalent of energy by 2050," the IEA said in a news release accompanying the report.
