5 ways companies can leverage pop-up stores
Walk through any major shopping district, and you're likely to stumble upon a number of pop-up shops. From online brands testing the waters for a physical presence to major retailers testing out new products, the pop-up concept has become a major tool for businesses regardless of size. The short-term retail market has exploded over the past few years, bridging the gap between e-commerce and brick-and-mortar stores and enabling brands a chance at premium real estate at a fraction of the cost.

Financing facility retrofits: The power of the negawatt
Most energy efficiency projects in institutional and commercial facilities leave a great deal of energy savings on the table. Why? The technical scope of a retrofit project is developed within the restrictive confines of a company's capital budgeting process. But the energy efficiency market is rapidly evolving to include no-first-cost financing options that finally enable facilities to implement projects that not only have deeper energy savings with longer paybacks but also improve the bottom line and the sustainability of their operations.

Lower Manhattan, New York, will undergo a retail revival
The New York Times
In Manhattan, New York, where most of the city's stores are small, street-level boutiques, mammoth shopping malls are rare. But next spring, the endless maze of cranes and construction pits that has enveloped Lower Manhattan for more than a decade will be mostly cleared away, making room for not one, but two, massive retail centers. At the World Trade Center retail complex, centered on the transportation hub, or Oculus, 150 stores are planned to entice shoppers through sprawling corridors to browse $900 metallic leather pumps at Tom Ford or stock up on discounted toothpaste at Duane Reade.

LEDs rock retailing
Interiors & Sources
Retailers are a unique customer group for lighting products because they realize the importance of aesthetics and customer experience more than owners of commercial, industrial, and office buildings. They're also more willing to invest in lighting in their facilities because of its direct impact on sales. Unlike other buyers, energy savings is a lesser concern for them, but operations and maintenance is frequently as important or more important than for other market sectors.

Why big data is big news for retailers
Retail Customer Experience
The concept of "big data" is nothing new. Retailers have been gathering information about the customers that shop in their stores — and increasingly via their online and mobile sites — for years. But today, big data empowers brands; armed with in-depth information about their audience demographics, it is easier than ever to deliver tailored experiences for customers.

Prepare your trees for summer storm season
By Jeannea Jones
Preparing for summer storms is not always easy as the weather can be unpredictable. Cleanup from summer storms can also equate to increased overtime, so it is important that grounds professionals be as proactive as possible when it comes to weather changes and preparation. According to recent surveys, more than 1 million trees are struck by lightning in the United States each year. Trees can be killed immediately from lightning strikes, but more often they are weakened allowing a secondary attack from disease or insect infestation to finish the job.

Ice storage: A cost-efficient way to cool commercial buildings while optimizing the power grid
When CALMAC CEO Mark MacCracken looks at a building, he sees thermal mass and air conditioning load, and – above all – an opportunity to vastly increase the efficiency of our national power grid. He sees the world of electricity production and consumption from an integrated, systems-thinking approach, and the potential for huge improvements. Which is a blessing and a curse, because alongside the enormous potential, he also observes an impressively high level of old-school, status quo thinking that keeps us mired in uneconomical ways of running our power grid and cooling our buildings.

Factory outlet centers' vital signs are robust, panel says
The International Council of Shopping Centers
Between 2006 and the end of 2014, more than 40 outlet malls will have been built in the U.S. and another dozen outside of the country, dwarfing the number of regional malls constructed in that span. But that pace will slow considerably in the coming years as the industry fine-tunes itself and draws a collective breath, in the process staving off oversaturation and potential cannibalization of sales by its brands' full-line stores that are sometimes uncomfortably close.

Green cleaning or greenwashing?
Today's Facility Manager
With many municipalities now requiring sustainable cleaning and maintenance programs and many private facilities looking to do the same, the hardest part of "going green" is not usually getting buy-in from constituents and colleagues, but ensuring that the program put in place is truly "green."

Using scent as a marketing tool, stores hope it — and shoppers — will linger
The Wall Street Journal
Stores relying most on aroma to draw in customers or nudge them to buy more have found achieving the right scent is complex. One person's sweet aroma is another's stench. A store's smell has to be powerful enough to lure in customers yet not offend neighboring businesses and landlords.
