IKEA reduces CO2 emissions by 5 %

IKEA has reduced its total CO2 emissions by 5 percent and CO2 emissions from goods transport by 10 percent in fiscal year 2009 compared to the previous year, according to the company’s 2009 Sustainability Report. Ninety-five percent of the home furnishing retailer’s CO2 emissions is attributed to material extraction, suppliers, customer transportation and the use of products. More

Fitness centers are starting to flex their muscles in high-end malls, and neighboring retailers have discovered they have the potential to drive large volumes of traffic. Long Island’s Roosevelt Field, one of the nation’s largest high-end shopping malls, added an XSport Fitness in 2006. The 60,000-sq.-ft. complex features 150 cardio machines, a 25-meter pool, basketball courts and more. It is open 24 hours and offers personal trainers, a day care center and a day spa. More

Tyler, Texas-based Brookshire Grocery Co. (BGC) took the wraps off a new logo for its concept food store, FRESH by Brookshire’s, which features the store’s name and a circular icon made of leaves that form a star-shape. The new emblem will be used on nearly every branded item in and around the store – from the shopping bags and outside signage to employee uniforms and brochures. More

Staples reaches 15 million Kilowatt milestone

Staples Inc announced that it has produced 15 million kilowatt hours from 32 solar installations throughout North America. The partnership program, which launched in 2005 with installations in Rialto, Calif., Ontario, Calif., and Englewood, N.J., has reduced CO2 emissions by an estimated 17.7 million pounds to date, according to the press release.
