Will buildings of the future be cloaked in algae?
Smithsonian
In the future, green buildings may actually be green. A gazebo, unveiled this month at the Expo 2015 world's fair in Milan, demonstrates how algae-filled plastic could serve as a living "skin" for buildings. "This technology is really quite exciting for us because this is the first time we've got it to this scale," says Marco Poletto, co-founder of ecoLogicStudio, the London architecture and urban design firm that created the 430-square-foot gazebo.

Implementing energy management for machinery and processing plants
Plant Engineering
Proper energy management allows for an efficient operation of equipment in oil and gas facilities. It also provides opportunities for engineering teams to develop a thorough understanding of energy sources, uses, and ways to improve. This includes efficiently monitoring energy in systems, machinery, equipment, processes, and technologies; how energy is sourced; and investigating better sources of energy, such as cogeneration or waste-heat recovery.

Green leases could save US office buildings $3.3 billion annually
CleanTechnica
Buildings are the United States' single-biggest energy consumer, and commercial buildings generate much of this demand, spanning roughly 87 billion square feet across 5.6 million buildings. Energy efficiency should be a no-brainer in commercial real estate, but competing interests between landlord and tenant often discourage commercial efficiency upgrades — a major roadblock to cutting power sector emissions and utility bills, considering 40 percent of all U.S. office space is leased.

Report: Variety, convenience, promotions make malls top shopping destination
ICSC
Consumer shopping habits have changed in the 40 years since the first U.S. mall opened, but the venue remains Americans’ favorite place to shop, according to a JLL survey of nearly 3,000 shoppers nationwide. The survey revealed that nearly 100 percent of the respondents had visited a mall at least once in the preceding three months. At least 60 percent claim they visited a mall as often as six times over that period and roughly 33 percent said they had made more than the six trips.

LEED improving on bridging the design to operations gap
FacilitiesNet
The LEED program in general has become more about existing buildings than new construction as evidenced by the certified square footage of existing buildings recently surpassing certified square footage of new construction projects. The enhanced commissioning and measurement and verification credits are examples of good opportunities that tie design and construction to operations in previous and the current version of LEED for New Construction rating system. As these elements aren’t required to achieve LEED certification, owners should take note and make an effort to pursue these credits, because they are potentially the biggest opportunities to impact long term energy related performance in a building.

Dos and don'ts of using 2 facility management tools
iOffice
If two heads are better than one, why aren't two facility management tools always better than a single tool? Often, the effectiveness of your facility management comes down to the strength of your tools and how they work with your facility's needs. While there are times when using two tools makes sense, often system integration is the better choice.
