Shopping centers morphing to lifestyle centers
MediaPost
Recent trends in U.S. retail suggest that shopping is becoming America's favorite pastime, not baseball, says a new Nielsen study, Brick by Brick: The State of the Shopping Center report. Despite the boom in e-commerce, U.S. consumers do most of their shopping at physical stores. Shopping centers, says the report, have become much more than just places to buy things, they're social centers, places for entertainment, and employment hubs. Lifestyle centers are meeting this opportunity, as they blend traditional retail tenants with upscale leisure uses that offer shoppers a place to buy as well as an experience, and a place to gather.

Ebay is introducing "24-hour window shops" in certain areas of New York City. The "window shops" are actually touchscreens measuring 9 feet across and 2 feet high.

As it preps for an IPO, the Container Store cleans up
Bloomberg Businessweek
The winners in retail these days are the giant companies trying to be many things to many people — Amazon.com, Home Depot, and Costco, to name a few. Just as it seems impossible to survive selling only hardware or toys—or even groceries — along comes the Container Store, which avoids the squeeze on narrow retail by focusing on a simple goal: selling stuff to hold your other stuff. It's kind of an anachronistic, laughable concept.
