US retail sales dropped 0.2 percent in May

U.S. retail sales declined in April and May, pulled down by a sharp drop in gas prices. But even after excluding volatile gas sales, consumers barely increased their spending. The Commerce Department said that retail sales dipped 0.2 percent in May. That followed a revised 0.2 percent decline April. The back-to-back declines were the first in two years. More

The California Energy Commission recently voted 4-0 to adopt new energy efficiency standards for residential and commercial buildings in California. This move will update the existing 2013 California Building Energy Efficiency Standards, also known as Title 24. As a result, new construction buildings in California as well as major alterations and additions to existing buildings will be amongst the most energy efficient in the nation when the new rules take effect on Jan. 1, 2014. Indoor malls in New York have received a mixed reception. Outlets like Pier 17 at the South Street Seaport and the Albee Square Mall in Downtown Brooklyn have posted lackluster performances. But the shops at the Time Warner Center and the Manhattan Mall in Midtown have generally been considered successes. So the developers of the first suburban-style fashion mall to be built in New York City in nearly 40 years — an indoor shopping center with several levels and bookended by department stores — are taking something of a chance. Canada's largest dollar-store chain, Dollarama Inc., reported a bigger-than-expected quarterly profit on strong sales of more expensive items and announced a stock repurchase plan, sending its shares nearly 7 percent higher. Dollarama, which currently sells items at prices of up to C$2, also said it will start introducing non-grocery items priced at C$2.50 and C$3 from August as it seeks to diversify its merchandise. Nike auctioning off Cole Haan, Umbro
