Canada inflation rises 0.9 percent in May, April retail sales fall

Canada's inflation rate advanced 0.9 percent in May from a year earlier on higher costs for meat and recreation products, while retail sales for April posted a surprise decline. The core rate, which excludes eight volatile products, slowed to 2.2 percent from 2.3 percent in April.

Toys'R'Us grows omnichannel capabilities in Europe

Efforts to transform the customer experience and optimize e-commerce capabilities at Toys'R'Us are getting a boost in Europe with a new distribution center. The retailer says it has completed a new distribution center in Saint-Fargeau-Ponthierry, France, to support the company's rapidly expanding e-commerce business throughout the country and in select sections of Europe. The 550,000-square-foot facility will service retail distribution to the country's 48 store locations and e-commerce operations throughout France, as well as expedite online order fulfillment to customers in Belgium, Luxembourg and Monaco.

Walmart CEO McMillon wants cake with icing

Walmart Stores Inc. president and CEO Doug McMillon invoked a baking metaphor at a retail conference in Northwest Arkansas to describe the company's merchandising philosophy and approach to offering customers everyday low prices. "We want to take care of the cake and have room to put icing on the top," McMillion said. This philosophy is understood by the company's best suppliers, according to McMillon, because it is core to the Walmart business model and a culture that promotes speed of decision-making and risk-taking with merchandising.

Men drive growth at Lululemon

Men are yogawear chain Lululemon's fastest growing customer group, and the retailer is taking steps to further serve them and the women who buy clothes for them, executives said on the retailer's first-quarter earnings call. Tunable window tint developed
Buildings
While shades are a common accessory for windows, a new tint has been developed that dynamically adapts to brightness, color temperature and opacity could take their place. Scientists from the University of Cincinnati partnered with industry professionals to develop a product that allows windows to be made milky for privacy yet allow 90 percent or more of available light into the room. The customizable aspect of the tint also enables users to toggle room brightness by dimming entering light and adjust the color temperature that fits the use of the room best.

A grocery store 'GPS' that cuts energy consumption

Grocery stores in France have been in the headlines recently since legislation was passed cracking down on food waste and forcing them to donate unsold food. This Carrefour is making news for another reason: its efforts to save another precious resource — energy. The enormous newly refurbished Carrefour has just announced the installation of an energy efficient LED-based connected lighting system designed to reduce electricity consumption while making the aisles a little easier to navigate.
