Two big retail chains on opposite sides of the Atlantic are betting that prescriptions, paper towels and nail polish are global goods. The American drugstore chain Walgreen Company has agreed to buy a 45 percent stake in Alliance Boots, the European pharmacy retailer, for $6.7 billion, in a deal that will allow both companies to extend their worldwide reach. Walgreen, which could gain full control of the company by 2015, can take advantage of Alliance Boots' operations in Europe and several emerging markets. More

US retail sales dropped 0.2 percent in May

Americans barely increased their spending at retail businesses in April and May, constrained by weak job creation and paltry wage increases. A sharp drop in gas prices pulled down overall sales in both months by 0.2 percent, the Commerce Department said. But excluding volatile gas station sales, retail sales grew only modestly in May and dipped in April. The report could lead economists to lower their outlooks for April-June economic growth. More

American apparel-maker Tommy Hilfiger plans to add 500 stores in India over the next five years to capitalize on the brand's surging popularity, the company has told the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion, the nodal agency that clears such foreign investments. Tommy Hilfiger Arvind Fashion Pvt Ltd, a 50:50 joint venture between the U.S. premium lifestyle brand and Ahmedabad-based Arvind Ltd, will invest Rs 60 crore in 45 company-owned stores; a significant number of the stores will be opened through franchisees, according to a foreign investment application filed by the company and reviewed by ET. More

Alimentation Couche-Tard has burnished its reputation as a tough and disciplined bidder by succeeding in its protracted, $2.7-billion takeover of Norway's Statoil Fuel & Retail ASA. The Quebec-based convenience store chain and fuel station operator's shares briefly hit an all-time high in Thursday trading after it said almost 91 percent of Statoil Retail's stock, or 272.8 million shares, have now been tendered to its original offer. Retail giant Target decreased its carbon intensity measured on a per square foot basis by 5 percent and measured against sales by 3 percent from 2007 to 2011, putting the company on track to met its 2015 goals of a 10 and 20 percent reduction against those measurements respectively, according to the company's 2011 corporate sustainability report. The technology giant announced it would begin selling its new Surface tablet later this year, to compete with Apple's iPad.
