Strategize to survive
National Retail Federation
It is hurricane season, but the good news is that forecasters are predicting a less active season in 2014. Weather forecaster ImpactWeather says to expect 10 named storms, four hurricanes and at least one intense hurricane this year — a departure from recent years when above-average seasons were forecast. Yet the prediction for 2014 should not give retailers much reason for pause. Retailers still need to be ready and vigilant, says Richard Mellor, senior asset protection advisor to the National Retail Federation. In fact, forecasters have cautioned that historically some of the most devastating hurricanes have come following predictions for less-active seasons.

Fire code changes informed by outside factors
FacilitiesNet
Changes to fire codes are sometimes driven by external factors. Here are a few recent additions to fire code that were driven by changes outside of the existing codes. Energy efficiency opportunities in the manufacturing sector
By Alan Kelsky
One third of the energy consumed in the United States is by the manufacturing sector. Ninety percent of the manufacturing sector are small- and medium-sized businesses, or SMM, that use about half of the energy consumed in manufacturing. Electrical demand, also known as on-site energy consumption is a rich target for SMM businesses as they tend to pay more per kWh than their larger competitors. With savings easy to come by, why have small- and medium-sized manufacturers been slow to jump on the savings bandwagon?
