Retail stocks reversed an earlier gain and turned lower after disappointing pending home sales and manufacturing reports, coupled with unexpected increase in jobless claims, raised more worries about the pace of the economic recovery. A survey of purchasing managers at companies across the nation from the Institute for Supply Management showed the expansion in the U.S. manufacturing sector moderated in June after three months of very rapid growth. The ISM index fell to 56.2 percent in June, the lowest since December, from 59.7 percent in May. More

Starbucks recycling cups at Chicago, Seattle stores

Starbucks announced it will begin recycling coffee cups from its Chicago locations, according to a report in the Seattle Times. Beginning in the fall, it will send used cups from its Chicago stores to Green Bay, Wis., where a Georgia Pacific paper mill will turn them into Starbucks napkins. The company has also been required to begin recycling or composting coffee cups at its 90 Seattle locations in order to comply with a city-wide ordinance mandating restaurants to recycle and compost. American Eagle Outfitters announced locations for the 77kids clothing stores it plans to open in July. The 77kids line, aimed at children ages 2 to 10, was launched in 2008 as an online-only brand by teen clothing retailer American Eagle, based on Pittsburgh's South Side. More

Convenience stores go after fast-food diners

U.S. convenience stores like 7-Eleven are challenging fast-food restaurants with expanded food and drink offerings, foodservice consulting firm Technomic said. "Convenience stores are investing in prepared foods, which is putting increased competitive pressure on quick-service restaurant chains," Technomic executive vice president Darren Tristano said. The move helped U.S. convenience store sales grow 1.5 percent in 2009 to about $10.4 billion, excluding inflation, Technomic said. More

Supervalu adds solar power to three Albertsons stores

Supervalu announced that it has installed rooftop solar power systems at three Albertsons grocery stores in Carlsbad, Oceanside and Alpine, California. The Solar installations were constructed by channel partner REC Solar. SunEdison financed the solar power plants and will monitor and maintain the systems that will produce more than 12 million kilowatt hours (kWh) of energy over the next 20 years. More

Australian clothing retailer Billabong International Ltd said it would acquire Canadian peer West 49 in a C$83.2 million all-cash deal. The acquisition of West 49, one of Billabong's retail partners in Canada, will allow the Australian company to increase the availability of its brands in the action sports market in North America. Bed Bath and Beyond Inc. executives, speaking at the retailer's annual meeting, said they are optimistic about the long-term prospects for the company, despite some near-term challenges. The Union-based company said it sees potential for another 400 Bed Bath stores in the U.S. and Canada. It plans to open 30 Bed Bath stores this year, along with 10 Christmas Tree Shops, and 20 Buy Buy Baby stores. More
