Lessons learned from the Massachusetts food waste ban — How Wegmans Food markets deal with organic waste
PRSM Mazine
When the word "recycling" is used, most people think in terms of compostable paper and yard waste or glass, metal, aluminum and plastic containers. While diverting these items from landfills is good for the environment, one category of trash that makes up a high percentage of total volume is often overlooked – food waste. The May/June Issue of PRSM Magazine features the article, “Lessons Learned from the Massachusetts Food Waste Ban – How Wegmans Food Markets Deals with Organic Waste” in which John Fischer, branch chief of Commercial Waste Reduction and Waste Planning for the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP), Lorenzo Macaluso, director of the Center for EcoTechnology's (CET) Green Business Services and Jason Wadsworth, sustainability manager, Wegman's Food Markets explain the specifics of the food waste ban and how tracking can actually be advantageous for companies. Read the article to find out how to overcome common barriers and how to standardize waste diversion programs.
