Nordstrom's shelves, now stocked by Pinterest
Bloomberg Businessweek
Plenty of companies have turned Pinterest into a de facto catalog as a way to drive online sales. Nordstrom is going in the other direction: stretching the image-based social network into its brick-and-mortar stores. In March, the department store chain started marking its “most-pinned” products from Pinterest with little “P” logos at two stores near its Seattle headquarters. Now Nordstrom has expanded the initiative to 13 of its 248 locations in a trial that will end just before the company's big anniversary sale later this month. The Pinterest push marks the latest play by the 112-year-old brand to leverage tech startups for in-store sales.

Vegetative roofs re-emerge as viable option for commercial facilities
FacilitiesNet
Vegetative roofs have a long and storied history, dating back centuries. But it's only in the last several decades that vegetative roofs have re-emerged as a viable commercial facilities roofing option. Some of the early attempts at vegetative roofs, though well-intentioned from an environmental or aesthetic standpoint, had issues due to a lack of planning, testing, and technical knowledge. They ultimately failed long before they were expected to.

Exclusive whitepaper: Amazon's local strategy
MultiBriefs Staff Writers
With its sights set on a profitable 2011 holiday season, online retail giant Amazon made a bold decision. Having millions of customers armed with smartphones and Amazon's barcode-scanning feature, it chose to offer customers 5 percent off purchases if they went into a local store, scanned items for price and then went home empty-handed — retailers be damned. Thus began showrooming. And as Amazon captures local store data only to encourage consumers to buy online, it does so at the expense of the local retailer.

Time to stop patent trolls
STORES
The last time Congress updated the nation's patent laws — only two years ago — few people in retail were talking about the issue. Disputes over patents were a problem mostly for the high-tech industry. Since then, however, patents have become front-page news — and retailers are among the biggest targets of frivolous lawsuits claiming patent infringement for things as innocuous as attaching a scanned-in copy of a customer's receipt to an email.
