J. C. Penney Plays Up Its Manhattan Opening from The New York Times J. C. Penney, a retailer with middle-American roots, intends to make a grand entrance with its first store in Manhattan, a place at the heart of retailing. The campaign, which is estimated to cost as much as $1 million, seeks to demonstrate that Penney will be at home in Manhattan. The potential “halo effect” on the Penney brand of opening and operating a store in the fashion and media capital of the country has inspired the extensive campaign, said Mike Boylson, executive vice president and chief marketing officer at the J. Crabtree & Evelyn, Retailer, Files for Bankruptcy from Bloomberg Crabtree & Evelyn Ltd., the maker of soaps, gifts and toiletries sold in 126 stores in 34 states, filed for bankruptcy protection in New York, citing a decline in consumer spending. The company, based in Woodstock, Connecticut, reported $46.2 million in assets and $33.2 million in liabilities in today’s bankruptcy petition. "We are confident that Chapter 11 gives us the opportunity to restructure the company with a business model that will be sustainable for long-term growth," Stephen Bestwick, the retailer's acting president, said in a statement.
