Lower Manhattan, New York, will undergo a retail revival
The New York Times
In Manhattan, New York, where most of the city's stores are small, street-level boutiques, mammoth shopping malls are rare. But next spring, the endless maze of cranes and construction pits that has enveloped Lower Manhattan for more than a decade will be mostly cleared away, making room for not one, but two, massive retail centers. At the World Trade Center retail complex, centered on the transportation hub, or Oculus, 150 stores are planned to entice shoppers through sprawling corridors to browse $900 metallic leather pumps at Tom Ford or stock up on discounted toothpaste at Duane Reade.

Driving around the mall
National Retail Federation
When someone says they're driving around the mall, the first thing that generally comes to mind is they're looking for a parking space. It may be time to rethink that. In May, New Jersey's Cherry Hill Mall became the first shopping center in the country to offer car shopping — not just oohing and ahhing at a luxury car on display, but actually taking a test drive.

Avoiding ADA lawsuits
FacilitiesNet
There has been a rise in the number of ADA accessibility lawsuits filed against businesses and facilities for alleged violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act over the last few years. These lawsuits have the potential to cost defendants $5,000 or more per complaint. The best defense against ADA lawsuits is to begin the process of removing accessibility barriers. Barriers are aspects of the built environment which lessen a disabled person's access. The removal process starts by assessing what needs to be done and then putting in place plans, procedures and policies to guide implementation.

A sneak peek inside Birchbox's 1st retail store
Fast Company
Birchbox opened the doors to its first physical store, an outgrowth of its popular online subscription service. The New York SoHo location looks like a living incarnation of its website, with products organized by category, like "cheek" and "second-day hair," instead of the usual brand kiosk you might see at Sephora or a department store.

Family Dollar stays positive following Q3 results
Retailing Today
Just a month after activist investor Carl Icahn became Family Dollar's largest shareholder prompting concerns of a hostile takeover, the company reported its third straight quarterly decline in same-store sales. Same-store sales for the third quarter ended May 31 decreased 1.8 percent because of fewer customer transactions, partially offset by an increase in the average customer transaction value.

Protect yourself from dangerous arc flashes
By Jeannea Jones
Arc flash is the result of an electrical fault (such as a voltage source contacting a grounding source), and it presents an extremely hazardous condition. The light and heat energy produces sufficient electrical energy to cause substantial damage, fire, injury or death. When an uncontrolled arc forms at high voltages, arc flashes can produce deafening noises, searing shrapnel and extremely dangerous temperatures.

Walmart embracing smaller stores in growth strategy
MarketWatch
It was a surprising order from the top of a company that long ago devised one of retail's most successful formulas and milked it for nearly half a trillion dollars in sales last year. Why a merger of pet retailers would make sense
The New York Times
PetSmart's activist shareholders are barking up the right tree. Jana Partners and Longview Asset Management, which together own about a one-fifth stake, are demanding that the purveyor of dog food and toys sell itself. There are other options to enhance shareholder returns, but a deal with Petco, the smaller rival controlled by TPG and Leonard Green, could be the pick of the litter.
