Target, Macy's, Kohl's vow to upgrade interior lighting
Energy Manager Today
The Energy Department says more than 65 organizations are participating in the Better Building Alliance's Interior Lighting Campaign to drive greater energy efficiency. The goal for the first year is for partners to install 100,000 high-efficiency troffers, or fluorescent lighting fixtures. Upgrading 100,000 fixtures can reduce energy use by 5 million kWh annually.

How the Apple store took over the world
The Washington Post
"Sorry, Steve: Here’s Why Apple Stores Won't Work," proclaimed a headline in BusinessWeek in May 2001. Published the day after Apple opened its first retail store in Tyson's Corner, Virginia, the opinion piece argued that Apple's focus on a few products and a "perfectionist attention to aesthetics" would limit the company's appeal. "Apple's problem is it still believes the way to grow is serving caviar in a world that seems pretty content with cheese and crackers," the article quotes former CFO Joseph Graziano as saying.

Consulting-Specifying Engineer
The best way to reduce sound is to limit the vibration produced by mechanical equipment. Examples are rotating shafts or gears, thermal processes such as combustion or fluid dynamic means such as airflow through a duct or fan interactions with air.

Shopping mall of tomorrow: How Westfield, Walmart are stripping convention
Forbes
Just as hemlines go up and down, retail history is patterned after the influences of its past and present. To envision the mall of tomorrow, we would benefit to first reflect on what was fashionable a decade ago. Consumer behavior expert Paco Underhill tried to capture it in the last chapter of his 2004 book "Call of the Mall." In it, he explores how traditional enclosed malls had been repurposed into recreational complexes, government centers and newly conceived high-end, open-air malls.

Walking in malls for better health
KING-TV
We had to walk fast to keep up with Basia Belza the other day. Most of our walking was backwards as we shot footage of her walking forward. We caught up with her at Bellevue Square Mall IN Bellevue, Washington, before the shops opened. She walks fast. The professor at the University of Washington School of Nursing is the author of a 48-page Mall Walking guide published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Newsweek did an article about the walking guide and the benefits of walking in malls.

A light bulb goes on, over the mall
The New York Times
Among the many promises of the Internet of Things — a network of Wi-Fi-connected devices and equipment managed with smartphones — is the automation of everyday life, whether finding a parking space or discovering a discounted blouse at the mall or lighting the streets when day shifts to dusk. But public lighting, it turns out, offers more than illumination.

European manufacturers get all worked up over energy labels
By Andrew Gaved
The cooling and heating industries in Europe have come together in a rare alliance with their compadres in the lighting sector to voice their concerns over the European Commission's latest initiative. The EC's proposal, announced this week, will "recalibrate" its decade-old energy-labeling scheme. But rather than improving consumer-driven energy efficiency, which is the intention, the EC could actually be fostering confusion with its policy, these groups suggest.

A&P files bankruptcy again after suppliers threaten cutoff
Bloomberg Business
Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co. filed for bankruptcy again, just three years after emerging from court protection with the help of investors including Ron Burkle's Yucaipa Cos. As the grocer bled cash in recent months, some vendors demanded faster payments and threatened to cut off supplies, A&P's financial advisory firm said in a court filing. The company's top goal in bankruptcy is to maintain daily deliveries of perishable inventory, such as eggs, butter and milk, FTI Consulting Inc. said.

Dick's Sporting Goods dives into the 'athleisure' craze
Fortune
Dick's Sporting Goods is the latest mainstream retailer to jump on the "athleisure" bandwagon for women. The retailer, with over 600 stores and nearly $7 billion in annual sales, this August will open two new, female-focused apparel and footwear stores. It is the latest effort to target growing interest in athletic gear, which is being worn not just at the gym and during athletic pursuits, but also increasingly incorporated into casual, everyday attire. And Dick's says this fashion trend is only just beginning to unfold.

Department stores, including Macy's, looking for ways to evolve
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Two days after Macy's announced it had sold its 1.2 million-square-foot flagship store in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania's downtown area, the company’s share price shot up. An activist investor bought into the department store operator with an eye toward turning the prime real estate the retailer has amassed over decades into a separate venture. Selling buildings is one way to reinvigorate the nation’s struggling department store retail sector, at least from an investor point of view. But the cash influx from a real estate sale doesn’t address the consumers who have been taking their money elsewhere as they discover innovative ways to shop.
