A bigger 'Battle of the Buildings'
The New York Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Imagine the TV show "The Biggest Loser," only the contestants are big buildings, and instead of competing to shed unwanted pounds, it's a race to reduce unnecessary energy consumption. That is how Maura Beard, director of strategic communications for Energy Star, describes the Environmental Protection Agency's national "Battle of the Buildings" competition, which celebrated its successes thus far with a midpoint weigh-in for the contenders. Even marked up, luxury goods fly off shelves
The New York Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail
article
Nordstrom has a waiting list for a Chanel sequined tweed coat with a $9,010 price. Neiman Marcus has sold out in almost every size of Christian Louboutin "Bianca" platform pumps, at $775 a pair. Mercedes-Benz said it sold more cars last month in the United States than it had in any July in five years. Even with the economy in a funk and many Americans pulling back on spending, the rich are again buying designer clothing, luxury cars and about anything that catches their fancy. More

Retailers report solid sales gains for July
The Associated Press via Los Angeles Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Many U.S. retailers posted solid sales in July as deep discounts and sweltering heat drove shoppers to air conditioned malls. But analysts worry that momentum won't continue through the back-to-school shopping season. Despite a flow of bad economic news that kept consumer confidence shaky, a wide range of merchants that reported their sales results for July delivered results that beat Wall Street estimates, including Limited Brands Inc., Costco Wholesale Corp. and Target Corp. Building owners get help staying ahead of new green laws
GreenerBuildings    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
More than 50 cities, regional governments and nations have enacted rating and disclosure measures to regulate the energy performance of commercial buildings in the past 15 years. In the U.S., five cities and two states have put similar laws on the books in the past five years. While the U.S. is relatively new to the process, the speed with which regulations are being developed and the federal push to make existing buildings more energy efficient make it likely that more local and regional governments will soon adopt building energy performance requirements. Retail sales no longer tradeable
TheStreet    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The list of retailers still reporting monthly same-store sales figures is slowly whittling down. Now, just 22 companies will release the figures, begging the question: Has the sample size become too small to analyze? More

The big chill
Stores    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Retailers are steadily embracing sustainability — perhaps none so much as supermarkets, particularly purveyors of natural and organic provisions. The new 28,000 square feet Sprouts Farmers Market store in Westlake Village, Calif., has received the Environmental Protection Agency's GreenChill Platinum Award for its state-of-the-art green refrigeration technology. The system is expected to reduce the store's total carbon footprint by 2,417,000 pounds over 10 years — the equivalent of removing 215 cars from the road for a decade. More

Chains win shoppers, July sales with discounts

article
Deep discounts and the warmest July weather in decades brought shoppers to malls, helping many retail chains report healthy monthly sales increases at established stores. July figures provide an early read on consumer demand in the U.S. economy at the start of the back-to-school season, the second-biggest selling period of the year after Christmas. More

What stores are doing
The Norman Transcript    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
While the tax-free weekend is certainly a benefit to shoppers, especially in this economy, retailers don't mind it either. At the Sooner Mall, the annual tax-free holiday has become an important weekend for the mall's tenants. In fact, the mall's general manager said it has but one rival in terms of busiest weekend of the year. More

Making the case for sustainability
Environmental Protection    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Communicating the benefits of a business solution to various stakeholders requires wearing multiple hats and re-focusing the conversation to the elements that are important to the individual. Facility managers are increasingly charged with new responsibilities, including creating sustainability programs that have positive effects on the environment, the health of building occupants and the bottom line. In addition to maintaining their facilities, facility managers must understand procurement issues, budgetary concerns and the well-being of staff, tenants and visitors. More

Bloomberg    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The world's largest mall owners are harnessing digital technology to stem an erosion in their tenant base by online retailing and keep shoppers coming. London-based Hammerson Plc plans to use software that tracks visitors to its malls using the signal from their mobile phones.
