JCPenney achieves LEED distinctions for green building design and operations

J. C. Penney Company, Inc. has been awarded a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) for Existing Buildings Gold certification by the U.S. Green Building Council for its Home Office campus located in Plano, Texas. The 1.9 million square-foot building serves as a workplace for more than 5,500 associates and is the third largest campus facility in the nation to receive this designation. Adding to this distinction, JCPenney recently received a LEED for New Construction Silver certification for the JCPenney store in Fairview, Texas and a LEED for Existing Buildings Silver certification for the JCPenney supply chain facility in Reno, Nev. LEED is the nation’s preeminent program for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings. More

Tim Hortons Inc. is selling its 50-percent interest in Maidstone Bakeries to its joint venture partner Aryzta AG for nearly half a billion dollars after the Swiss company invoked a provision forcing Tims to buy or sell its entire stake. "Because of the international nature of this relationship, the value that we put on the facility was greatly different than what our partner Aryzta was able to put on it," said president and chief executive officer Don Schroeder. Whole Foods Market here is ratcheting up the number of new-store openings as it re-accelerates an aggressive growth program. After a period during which it slowed new-store growth to invest in price, the company said it expects to open 17 new stores in 2011 and 19 in 2012, compared with 15 stores opened last year and 15 more expected this year. Walmart Canada and some of Canada's largest corporations including Heinz Canada, Frito-Lay Canada, and Coca-Cola Canada have provided progress reports on their sustainability initiatives that they committed to six months ago at the Walmart Canada Green Business Summit. Each of the Canadian companies was asked to commit to launching a major sustainability project in Canada that focused on waste, energy, water or sustainable products and services. More

Walgreens unveiled its new expanded food selection in several Chicago communities identified as food deserts, or areas that lack access to basic foods necessary to maintain a healthy diet. The Deerfield, Ill.-based drug store chain has redesigned 10 of its stores on Chicago’s south and west sides to include more than 750 new food items, including fresh fruits and vegetables, frozen meats and fish, pasta, rice, beans, eggs, and whole grain cereals. More
