New upscale outlet mall in Minnesota, expected to lure visitors, inspire other development
Minneapolis Star Tribune
It's been more than 10 years since the city began clearing dozens of businesses from the 65-acre Cedar Grove, Minnesota-area, until Jensen's restaurant and a bowling alley were the only ones left. The economic slump and legal battles over the city's use of eminent domain stymied efforts to redevelop the ghost town. Now an upscale outlet mall with more than 100 stores peddling Calvin Klein, Coach, Polo Ralph Lauren and other brands is set to open next door. The first of its kind in the Twin Cities, it's projected to draw as many as 4 million visitors a year.

R.I.P., department stores? Not yet.
Fortune
Beating up on department stores is a favorite pastime of retail haters. And yet, despite accusations of having a passé business model, dusty stores and an aging customer base, U.S. department stores have staged a comeback in the last two years — and are arguably more vital than they have been in a long time.

Renewable energy: Pursuing multi-site solar
Today's Facility Manager
As the demand for renewable energy continues to grow, more facility managers are looking for ways to improve sustainability with large-scale solar programs that establish their environmental commitment while providing proportionate financial rewards. For those who manage multiple properties, "going green" at one facility alone can be challenging enough. Implementing renewable energy across a portfolio of properties can seem even more daunting.

Sustainable schedules for custodial services
By Jeannea Jones
Sustainability has been around for a while, and the most common connection is energy. We spend energy with most every task during a workday, and custodial services are no exception. Past trends have been to have janitorial services arrive as the tenant leaves for the day.

Developing an energy master plan
Facility Management Journal
While master plans are often devised for construction, renovation and demolition projects, they are typically overlooked in the world of energy efficiency and sustainability: an energy master plan is a key element of planning that many facility managers ignore. An energy master plan provides a holistic, comprehensive methodology of planning for a facility's current and future energy needs, instead of a one-off approach to fixing inefficient or broken systems. It identifies inefficiencies and provides conservation solutions to help facility managers achieve greater value based on a feasible and realistic return on investment for identified projects, and is thus a worthy investment.

Wal-Mart's long-term growth strategy: Try, try and try again
The Associated Press via CNBC
Wal-Mart Stores Inc. thought shoppers would like the opportunity to use a smartphone app to scan items they want to buy as they walk through store aisles. In theory, they could speed through self-checkout. But customers couldn't figure out how to work the "Scan & Go" app during tests in 200 stores, so Wal-Mart nixed it.
