Apple stock hits $500 for first time in more than 6 months

Apple's stock topped $500 a share in midday trading for the first time since late January, more than six months ago. The stock surged more than 5 percent in late trading following two tweets from billionaire activist investor Carl Icahn, noting that he had purchased a large number of shares in the company and believed the stock to be "extremely undervalued." Icahn also revealed that he personally suggested to CEO Tim Cook that Apple increase its share buyback plan.

Ikea acquires Irish wind farm to power locations in Ireland

Swedish retailer Ikea has bought a wind farm in Ireland to power its furniture stores in Dublin and Belfast, according to a report by the Belfast Telegraph. The Irish facility’s four turbines are expected to generate 25,000 megawatt-hours of electricity and bring the total number of Ikea-owned windmills to more than 100 in the U.K., Germany, France, Poland, Denmark and Sweden.

Kohl's climbs after sales forecast exceeds some estimates

Kohl's Corp. the third-largest U.S. retailer, rose the most in more than a year after it forecast sales for this quarter that beat some analysts' estimates. The shares climbed 4.8 percent to $53.28 at 12:24 p.m. in New York after advancing 7.2 percent for the biggest intraday increase since July 2012.

Lowe's is sole bidder for Orchard Supply
The Associated Press via CNBC
Orchard Supply Hardware Stores has not received any additional buyout offers, leaving Lowe's as the sole bidder. Orchard is a Sears spinoff that filed for bankruptcy in June. That same month the San Jose, Calif. company received an approximately $205 million offer from Lowe's Cos. for 72 of its stores.

US retail sales grow for 4th consecutive month

American retail sales gained 0.2 percent in July, immediately following the larger than expected 0.6 percent gain made in June, according to the U.S. department of commerce. The median forecast of the 81 economists surveyed by Bloomberg was a 0.3 percent gain for June.

Boost in Walgreens' July sales
Retailing Today
July sales at Walgreens experienced an 8 percent boost. They totaled $6.03 billion, up from $5.59 billion for the same month in fiscal 2012. Comparable-store sales increased by 6.3 percent in July. Calendar day shifts positively impacted total comparable sales by 1.4 percentage points, while generic drug introductions in the last 12 months negatively impacted total comparable sales by 1.8 percentage points.
