Retail sales in July rise by the highest rate
in 5 months

Los Angeles Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Shoppers lent a helping hand to the economy in July as retail sales grew by the largest amount in five months, bolstering hope that consumers will continue to buy despite worries over a stubbornly high unemployment rate. The Commerce Department said sales rose 0.8 percent last month, beating economist expectations of a more modest 0.3 percent jump. The positive sign follows three previous months of declines that included a 0.7 percent drop in June. More

Retailing Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Sales for the second quarter ended July 28 increased 10.5 percent to $1.7 billion thanks to a 4.5 percent increases in same store sales and the addition of 77 new Dollar Tree stores, the company announced. Net income increased 25.6 percent to $119.2 million and earnings per share increased 30.8 percent to 51 cents. The profit performance met analysts’ estimates, but guidance for the third quarter in the range of 47 cents to 51 cents was a penny less than the 52 cents Wall Street expected and shares of the company sold off sharply after the earnings report. Reuters    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Walmart Stores Inc.'s full-year profit may miss Wall Street expectations as growth slows in international markets, pressuring the world's largest retailer even as its U.S. discount stores continue to rebound. Walgreens campaign touts its history of innovation
MediaPost    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Walgreens may be viewed as a corporate giant chain in the minds of many people, but in fact, its history is rooted in the corner drugstore nostalgia of a bygone era. The Deerfield, Ill.-based company is looking to bring some of that history to light with a new brand campaign from GSD&M. In its first work for the retailer since winning the advertising account last May, the Austin, Texas-based agency looks to tout the company’s 111-year-history of innovation. More

Costco, the genuine retail CSR leader?
Triple Pundit    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Could Costco possibly be the most genuine leader when it comes to corporate social responsibility (CSR) and governance? Retailers across the country constantly crow about the achievements they have made on a bevy of issues from more sustainable fish (Safeway) to solar installations (Walmart). Other retailers are yanking the chains on pork producers to cease the cruel use of gestation crates and of course just about everyone is on the organic and local produce bandwagon. More
