Staples: Office Depot acquisition on track for year-end closure

Staples is on track to complete its acquisition of Office Depot by the end of the year, Staples' chairman and CEO Ron Sargent said. Speaking on a second-quarter earnings conference call, Sargent said the two companies will soon be finished responding to regulators' requests for more information about the companies' proposed $6.3 billion merger.

Saks Canada secures flagship brands despite Holt Renfrew's luxury dominance

Saks Fifth Avenue's Canadian flagship brand mix is almost set and according to company president Marc Metrick, it will feature "a designer assortment worthy of Saks at its best". Mr. Metrick also revealed that Saks' Toronto flagship will be 20,000 square feet larger than originally anticipated, though still smaller than Holt Renfrew's Canadian flagship.

Mississippi retail asset lures out-of-state investor

A new owner has emerged for The Shops at Barnes Crossing, a 75,000-square-foot neighborhood shopping center anchored by Bed Bath & Beyond, Dollar Tree, and David's Bridal in Tupelo, Mississippi. The transaction closed for approximately $8.72 million, representing a cap rate of 8.2 percent, one of the lowest in the state of Mississippi for this type of retail property.

J.C. Penney loss narrows as Sephora stores help attract shoppers

Penney Co Inc. reported a smaller-than-expected quarterly loss, helped by demand for home goods and high-end Sephora beauty products, indicating that the department store operator's turnaround efforts were starting to pay off. Shares of the company, which also said the current quarter was off to a strong start, rose as much as 9 percent in early trading.
