Import numbers show signs of stronger holiday season in 2012
National Retail Federation    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
With retailers smack in the middle of back-to-school, it's way too early to predict what will happen during the holiday season. National Retail Federation's annual forecast doesn't come out until October, and lots can happen between now and then. But one set of numbers released this week could give some insight into what retailers are expecting. NRF's Global Port Tracker report is showing a strong increase in imports for August, September and October – the three key months of the year when retailers import the bulk of the merchandise they will sell during the holiday season. Grocery chains buy up shopping centers in a defensive play
Retail Traffic    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
As more grocery-anchored center owners decide to put their properties on the market to take advantage of strong investor demand, grocery chains are stepping in and claiming the centers they anchor to avoid risking the uncertainty of a new owner. The biggest grocery chains in the U.S. have invested nearly $450 million in grocery-anchored center purchases during the past 24 months, according to Real Capital Analytics, a New York City-based research firm. Lakeland, Fla.-based Publix, which operates 1,058 stores in five southeastern states, has been the most active buyer during this period. More

Online retail isn't always better retail
MediaPost    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
It has become axiomatic that brick-and-mortar retail is not a place to buy things but to look at products, then maybe benchmark prices before going online to make the purchase. But a new mystery shopper study by StellaService suggests that, at least for the $83.8 billion back-to-school season, in which 2-out-of-5 consumers will do their shopping online this year (nearly double the number from five years ago), going to a physical store can save money and time. As retail sales tick up in July, back-to-school shopping plays important role
National Retail Federation    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
After an unusually strong winter driven by sales of warm weather attire and bright, trendy fashions, a rocky spring followed, making it anyone's best guess for what retailers would see from shoppers entering the dog days of summer. Dog days might be an understatement this year, with one of the hottest July's on record combined with extreme drought conditions for many states across the country. The Commerce Department in July reported that June retail sales missed expectations, showing a consumer who was clearly hesitant to spend on anything other than the essentials, such as health and personal care items and grocery products. At that time, NRF's Chief Economist Jack Kleinhenz stated that the data was "discouraging but not demoralizing." More

National Retail Federation    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The $7 billion settlement in a retail industry lawsuit over Visa and MasterCard swipe fees announced over the weekend was initially reported as a victory for retailers.
