The Lakes Mall — 700,000-square-foot facility in Fruitport Township, Mich. — established the area as a regional retail destination and was the catalyst for hundreds of millions of dollars of investment in other stores and restaurants. "For the millennium generation along the lakeshore, they were raised with The Lakes Mall," said Cindy Larsen, president of the Muskegon Lakeshore Chamber of Commerce. "They only know The Lakes Mall as it is part of their identity of Muskegon. It is how they view the retail world." More

GNC Holdings Inc., which sells nutritional products, said that it is acquiring online retailer LuckyVitamin.com for an undisclosed sum. GNC said it is paying for Lucky, which sells nutritional supplements and other wellness products, with cash on hand. More

Williams-Sonoma profit surges 28 percent in Q2

Williams-Sonoma reported that profit for the second quarter surged 28 percent to $39 million, citing online strength and international sales for the improved performance. The company reported GAAP diluted earnings per share of 38 cents compared with 28 cents for the same period last year. Revenue rose 5 percent to $815 million. More

Toys R Us to open 21 new stores before year ends

Toys R Us Inc. said that it will open 21 new stores before the year ends. The privately held toy company said this will include 11 "R" superstores — which have full-size Toys R Us and Babies R Us stores in one location — and 10 stores that will have smaller Toys R Us and Babies R Us stores in the same location. The stores will be in 13 states including Alabama, California, Texas and New Jersey. More
