Proposed changes to labor laws could cost retailers and suppliers millions
Submit your comments now!

PRSM
The Department of Labor has proposed changes to federal overtime rules that could cost U.S. employers millions in additional labor costs. The Sept. 4 deadline for comments is rapidly approaching and your input is critical.

Under current rules, employees making up to $455 a week ($23,660 a year) are automatically entitled to overtime pay when working more than 40 hours a week. Managers and professionals who make more can be declared exempt from overtime, but only if they meet certain conditions such as having supervision of other workers as their primary duty. The update would raise the wage threshold to about $970 a week ($50,440 a year). View the DOL Fact Sheet.

Federal overtime expansion would undermine career advancement for managers and hourly workers, hinder customer service, productivity and training, generate more litigation opportunities for trial lawyers, add to employers' costs and ultimately harm job creation.

By Danielle Wegert
Mapsco books and huge paper maps are a thing of the past. Now, we have our mobile devices equipped with GPS that can give us verbal directions while we drive. We can get directions to practically anywhere with the swipe of our finger. However, once you get to that location, do you know how to get around? Will your smartphone GPS guide you to the nearest restroom? Can you find the store you need in a shopping mall, or even a specific item within the store?
