Reuters    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Consumer spending got off to a fairly firm start in the third quarter, rising by the most in five months and offering hope economic growth would pick up this quarter. Other data showed the number of Americans filing new claims for jobless benefits held steady last week, indicating a lack of improvement in the labor market and keeping additional monetary stimulus from the Federal Reserve on the table. 5 trends brick-and-mortar retailers need to know to reach the 'new kid' in town
Chain Store Age    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The “new kid” in town is that new and emerging customer taking us all by storm and forever changing our retail landscape – the millennial shopper. They are armed with an arsenal of information to assist them in making buying decisions and are exceptionally diverse in how and where they shop and how they spend their money. These new kids research products for best value and choices; they have already checked social media sources to learn the approval ratings of the selected product; and, by the way, if they decide to wander into the brick-and-mortar store to purchase, they will double check the pricing options on their mobile device as they are standing in your store looking at the item. AT&T opens a swanky 10,000-square-foot flagship store in Chi-Town
TechCrunch    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
AT&T opened up its 10,000-square-foot flagship retail store on Michigan Ave. in Chicago. It's a bit of a beast, with an 18-foot Connect Wall that displays news and product info to everyone in the store and in the street. But despite all the cool technology (and trust me, there’s plenty), AT&T is really looking to have more of connection with its consumers. When you walk into any carrier store, the phone usually comes first. Samsung, Apple, and Motorola come to mind — not AT&T. But the blue carrier is looking to remedy that. More

Retailers turn to 'soft surveillance' to fight customer anonymity
Harvard Business Review    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
If a tree falls in the forest and no one hears it, does it make a noise? That age-old question resonates with the specialists who provide retailers with customer intelligence. In their case, the question is: If a shopper leaves without making a purchase, is there any way for a store to know she was there? And why didn't she become a paying customer? More

USA Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article

Employing dietitians pays off for supermarkets
The New York Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Hy-Vee is the only grocery chain in the country that posts a registered dietitian in almost every one of its 235 stores. In rural areas, some of its more than 190 dietitians serve a cluster of stores. That puts it at the forefront of a phenomenon sweeping the grocery business as it tries both to capitalize on growing consumer awareness of the role food plays in health and wellness and to find new ways to fend off competition from specialty markets like Whole Foods and big-box stores like Walmart. Go upscale in a recession? Sounds crazy but this unlikely retailer made it work
Forbes    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The rich don't feel economic recessions the way everyone else does, and that's one reason investors in companies like Coach and Nordstrom made out like bandits in this muddling recovery while Walmart Stores (investors got merely good returns, despite its increased store traffic. Forbes    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Social shopping, just hype not so long ago, is now being embraced by online retailers.
