American shoppers remained resilient in August despite wild stock market swings and worries about the economy, resulting in a respectable back-to-school shopping season so far for many merchants, according to newly released sales results. However, the impact of Hurricane Irene, which ploughed through the Carolinas and up the East Coast last weekend, hurt business for merchants, particularly clothing retailers. Retailers are still hoping to recoup lost sales in the next few weeks. More

Zale Corp. reported its third straight quarter of same-store sales gains as middle-class shoppers felt more comfortable this year about buying jewelry for Mother's Day and the bridal season. The sales gains helped the jewelry retailer report a narrower operating loss, but higher diamond, gold and silver costs put pressure on the company's gross margin. More

Costco CEO to leave; August sales up 11 percent

Costco Wholesale announced that CEO Jim Sinegal will step down at the beginning of 2012. Sinegal said he will leave the company on Jan. 1, the same day he turns 76. Costco also released same-store sales data for August, reporting that revenue from stores open for at least a year rose 11 percent last month. More

Retail spending in the Calgary region of Canada is forecast to soar to more than $25 billion a year in 2012, according to a major market report. The KubasPrimedia Retail Sales Outlook Canada report for the third quarter of this year predicts the Calgary census metropolitan area will see 5.6 percent annual growth this year to $23.8 billion followed by 5.9 percent growth in 2012 to $25.2 billion. Gap has pledged to cut its greenhouse gas emissions 20 percent by 2015, from a 2008 baseline, in the company's fifth Social and Environmental Responsibility report. The greenhouse gas goal follows an earlier 20 percent decrease in GHG emissions from 2003 to 2008, exceeding a goal of 11 percent set as part of Gap's participation in the now-defunct Climate Leaders program. DSW's model of bringing designer goods to a budget-conscious consumer continues to pay off, as the company posted sales and earnings growth for its second quarter. DSW Inc. reported that net sales for the second quarter increased 4.7 percent to $476.3 million from $415.1 million in the second quarter of 2010. Comparable sales for the second quarter increased 12.3 percent. More

Shares in discount and dollar stores rose after Dollar General Corp. topped Wall Street's expectations with its second-quarter profit and raised its full-year outlook. Dollar General, based in Goodlettsville, Tenn., said shoppers bought more candy and groceries at its stores during the period to help drive its revenue up 11 percent and its profit up 3 percent.
