Discounts spur surprising retail sales gains

Many U.S. retailers are reporting surprisingly solid gains for August, helped by aggressive discounting, even as unusually hot weather and job worries kept a lid on back-to-school buying. The results are providing a sliver of hope for the economic recovery, but worries still remain about the critical holiday season. Costco Wholesale posted a robust gain, boosted by higher gas prices and improved international revenue. Limited Brands and Macy's also had solid revenue increases. But shoppers are still keeping to their lists, hurting a number of clothing stores such as Aeropostale. Target's results came in below expectations. More

Walgreen to buy assets of ApothecaryRx in 5 states

Walgreen Co. said that it will buy the assets of 18 ApothecaryRx pharmacies in Colorado, Oklahoma, Minnesota, Missouri and Illinois from Graymark Healthcare Inc. The financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed but the deal is expected to close in the fourth quarter. More

Williamsburg Prime Outlets sold to Indianapolis company

An Indianapolis-based company will take ownership of the Prime Outlets Center in Williamsburg. Simon Property Group Inc., the largest mall owner in the United States, announced that it has completed its transaction with the Prime Outlets Acquisition Company. The completed sale is valued at $2.3 billion. The value of the transition includes the Barceloneta outlet center. The Baltimore-based Prime Outlets owned 22 centers including the outlet in Williamsburg. More

The Dallas-based company has been warning for almost two years that it might need bankruptcy court protection to reorganize its nearly $1 billion in debt, as it struggles with dwindling cash and a shrinking business hurt by competition and its own store closings. Albertsons Store to use fuel cell for energy

An Albertsons supermarket set to open in the Clairemont community will be one of the first in California to generate nearly 90 percent of its electricity with a 400-kilowatt fuel cell from UTC Power, South Windsor, Conn. The project is estimated to cut carbon dioxide emissions by 478 metric tons each year compared with California "non-baseload" power plants, said UTC Power, adding that the annual nitrogen oxide emissions reduction is equal to removing 82 cars from the roadways per year. More



Costco's key August revenue figure rises 7 percent

Costco Wholesale Corp. said that revenue at stores open at least a year increased 7 percent in August buoyed by higher gas prices and improved international revenue. This topped the 4.2 percent rise that analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters expected. But fourth-quarter and full-year revenue missed Wall Street expectations. The wholesale club operator reported a 6 percent rise in revenue at U.S. stores open at least a year and an 11 percent increase in its overseas locations. More

The Pantry hires Borders CFO, will buy 47 convenience stores

Convenience store giant The Pantry made two major announcements: Former Borders Group COO and CFO Mark Bierley have joined The Pantry as CFO, and the Cary-based company has signed a deal to buy 47 convenience stores in Kansas and Missouri. Bierley steps into a role being vacated by Frank Paci, who has informed the board that he will resign as of Sept. 26 to "pursue other interests." Bierley's first day will be Sept. 27. More



Shoe seller DSW second-quarter profit triples

The shoe retailer DSW Inc. reported its second-quarter profit more than tripled as revenue rose 12 percent. The results beat analysts' expectations and DSW reiterated that it expects net income of $1.80 to $1.95 per share for the year. Analysts expected earnings of $1.94 per share for the year. For the three months ended July 31, DSW said net income rose to $23.5 million, or 52 cents per share, from $7.6 million, or 17 cents per share, a year ago. More

Report: A&P mulling sale of Food Emporium chain

Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co, which operates the struggling A&P supermarket chain, is mulling the sale of its Food Emporium stores to boost liquidity, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter. The supermarket chain, which announced plans last month to close 25 under-performing stores, runs more than 400 stores under the A&P, Waldbaum's, Pathmark, Food Emporium and Food Basics names. The Food Emporium chain includes 16 stores in Manhattan. More
