Bloomberg Businessweek    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Holiday retail sales in the U.S. may rise 3.3 percent as more confident consumers increase their trips to the mall, according to researcher ShopperTrak. Store visits during the busiest shopping period of the year are expected to rise 2.8 percent after declining last November and December, according to an e-mailed statement from the Chicago-based firm that tracks so-called foot traffic in thousands of U.S. stores. Sales gained 3.7 percent during the same period in 2011, the company said. More

Retailers Walmart, Costco, Kohl's, Ikea and Macy's make up the top five corporate solar users in terms of on-site capacity, with other retail businesses taking four of the remaining spots in the top 20, according to a report by the Solar Energy Industries Association and the Vote Solar Initiative. Walmart has 65,000 kW in installed capacity, according to Solar Means Business: Top Commercial Solar Customers in the U.S. Costco boasts 38,900 kW of capacity. Big retailers think small for new stores
The Detroit News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Large-scale retailers in Michigan and across the country are discovering bigger isn't always better. Target, Best Buy and Grand Rapids-based Meijer Inc. are among retailers downsizing, from the traditional big-box stores, to cater to a growing urban customer base and a changing economy. The less-is-more mentality has helped Target and Meijer locate outside suburbia into cities such as Atlanta and Chicago. More

PCWorld    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Microsoft has a big month ahead of it, with the release of both Windows 8 and its Surface tablet coming in October. To support these releases, the company will open 32 new retail locations in the U.S. and Canada. The announcement comes as no surprise, but the number of stores is a surprise. Last month, Microsoft job listings were discovered for 12 pop-up stores. However, Monday's list is much larger, and shows the company is serious about expanding its retail footprint. More

Clear skies ahead: Lands' End puts global e-commerce into the cloud
STORES    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
T he conversation about the cloud has shifted. Instead of convincing IT teams of its effectiveness, many retailers are seeing it as a necessary update. In early 2010, Lands' End was considering cloud computing and software as a service (SaaS) to transform outdated technologies and add new capabilities. The Wisconsin-based classic American lifestyle brand had been using e-commerce since 1995 — and the technology for order entry showed it. More

Wave of U.S. retailers headed to Calgary, Canada
Calgary Herald    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Before the end of 2013, six former Zellers stores will be converted into Target stores. And nearly every month, another U.S. fashion brand hangs its signpost in a Calgary mall. In fact, Calgarians may soon have no need at all to travel south of the border in search of their favourite U.S. chains. With the U.S. economy still uncertain, a growing number of American retailers are looking to Canada — and Calgary — to fulfil their expansion dreams. More
