The Professional Retail Store Maintenance (PRSM) Association Mid-Year Conference concluded yesterday in Dallas with excellent reviews. This event brought over 400 retailers and vendors together to discuss "Building Facility Management Credibility." Held Sept. 14-16 at the Hyatt Regency DFW, the conference featured GameStop CEO J. Paul Raines as the keynote speaker. Raines spoke before a packed room of retailers and suppliers. He told the audience to create a reputation for excellence with new ideas, forward thinking and what can I do better attitude. "If you do this you will gain credibility and there is nothing more important than gaining that reputation." stated Raines. "Leaders will see your department as a 'strategic weapon' versus a cost." August retail sales up 0.4 percent, best in 5 months

Retail sales rose in August by the largest amount in five months, adding to evidence that a late spring economic swoon was temporary and not the start of another recession. Retail sales increased 0.4 percent last month, the Commerce Department said. It was the second straight monthly increase and the biggest gain since March. Excluding a decline in autos, retail sales increased 0.6 percent. That followed two relatively flat months and a sharp drop in May. More

Kohl's unveils 100th rooftop solar installation in May's Landing, NJ

Kohl's Department Stores announced that the company reached a new milestone in its solar program by activating the solar panels at its 100th solar location in Mays Landing earlier this month. Kohl's has solar installations in six other states, and also announced a plan to expand its solar program into Pennsylvania. Solar is an integral component of the company's energy management efforts and commitment to be carbon neutral by the end of 2010. More

Toys R Us opening 600 holiday stores in malls, hiring 10,000

Toys R Us plans to invade the mall this holiday season, opening 600 temporary "Express" stores in malls and other shopping centers around the country, more than six times last year's count, and hiring 10,000 seasonal workers. The move is the latest in Toys R Us' attempt to capture more holiday dollars with tough competition from online retailers and mass merchants such as Walmart and Target. It also fills a gap in shopping malls created when KB Toys, which had been the largest mall-based toy seller, went out of business in 2008. More

Cedar Shopping Centers, Inc. announced that it has entered into a definitive purchase contract to purchase the Cross Keys Place shopping center in Sewell, N.J., on behalf of the joint venture between Cedar (20 percent) and RioCan Real Estate Investment Trust of Toronto (80 percent) for approximately $26.5 million, exclusive of closing costs and adjustments. Cross Keys Place, completed in 2007, is a 148,000 square foot retail strip shopping center, 100 percent leased, and anchored by a 42,000-square-foot Sports Authority, a 35,000-square-foot Bed, Bath & Beyond, a 21,000-square-foot AC Moore, a 19,000-square-foot Old Navy and a 16,000-square-foot Petco. Shares in Pier 1 Imports soared nearly 17 percent before settling to a still healthy 6.5 percent gain on news that the home-furnishings retailer hit its fourth consecutive quarter of profitability and came in slightly above Wall Street expectations. "The tarnish is nearly removed. We are starting to shine again," Chief Executive Alex Smith told analysts during a conference call, adding: "We know how to keep the momentum going." More
