Malls of America: Death rumors greatly exaggerated

It is unsurprising that malls would fail if the surrounding market can no longer support them, according to Ellen Dunham-Jones, professor of architecture and urban design at Georgia Institute of Technology. Trends to increasing population in urban areas have increased the popularity of mixed-used real estate developments that combine residential housing, retailers, and businesses into a single, easy-to-navigate edifice. The Mall of America in suburban Minneapolis may be suffering from such a shift.

Zero energy buildings to become big business in future

Navigant Research has released a new study that concludes that these high-performance properties will be big business in the future, with the zero energy building market's annual global revenue skyrocketing from an estimated $639 million in 2014 to $1.4 trillion in 2035. It won't be a smooth road. There will be challenges as the existence of zero energy buildings goes on the rise, the name being one of them.

Value Retail News: Outlet center development surging

The factory outlet concept is as hot with developers and investors as it is with consumers, said ICSC president and CEO Michael P. Kercheval, at the Value Retail News Fall Outlet Leasing & Marketing Convention, in Secaucus, New Jersey. North American outlet centers continue to outperform traditional malls, he pointed out. "Sales today at U.S. malls are almost $480 per square foot," he said.

Transparent film keeps windows ice-free

The film, made from graphene nanoribbons covered with a thin layer of polyurethane, can be painted on any glass or plastic surface and conducts both heat and electricity.

Claire's opening branded shops inside Toys R Us

Claire's plans to open shops inside of 12 Toys R Us stores in the U.S. by the end of the year, part of the teen accessory retailer's strategy to sell outside its traditional mall stores. The Claire’s-branded shops, which for 18 months have been tested inside Toys R Us stores in Europe, will feature Claire’s distinctive purple signs and will sell an assortment of jewelry, headbands, legwear, jewelry holders and other accessories found in Claire's stand-alone stores, the companies said.

Kohl's holiday hiring to rise by a third

Kohl's Corp. says it will hire more than 67,000 seasonal workers nationwide for the holiday shopping season, about a third more than last year's 50,000. The department store operator expects to hire an average of 50 associates per store, up 25 percent from a year ago.

Macy's Inc. unveiled a series of technological initiatives aimed to increase the seamlessness of its omni-channel shopping experience at its 840 Bloomingdale's and Macys' stores. Costco to open 9 stores by end of 2014

Costco said it plans to open nine new warehouse stores before the end of calendar year 2014, following a boost in net sales for August and the fourth quarter. During the month of August, net sales were $8.8 billion, an increase of 10 percent from $8 billion during the similar period last year. Same-store sales in the United States increased 7 percent.
