How facility managers handle increasing workload, shrinking budget, staff

Ask facility managers what their biggest concern about the job is, and the odds are good that the response will focus on not having enough resources or the ever-increasing workload. Those two concerns consistently top the list of challenges that facility managers face, according to Building Operating Management's annual FM Pulse survey; this year, 30 percent of respondents say their No. 1 concern is not having enough resources.

Macy's, JCPenney among retail companies teaming up to block organized crooks

Online shopping forces malls to evolve to keep customers coming back in Canada

Mall owners must find ways to lure shoppers as digital alternatives such as global powerhouse Amazon.com Inc. make it harder to attract consumers. Last year, e-commerce made up just 4.5 percent of total Canadian retail sales, but it is expected to jump to 8.2 per cent, or $43.95-billion, by 2018, according to researcher eMarketer.

Zero energy buildings to become big business in future

Navigant Research has released a new study that concludes that these high-performance properties will be big business in the future, with the zero energy building market's annual global revenue skyrocketing from an estimated $639 million in 2014 to $1.4 trillion in 2035. It won't be a smooth road. There will be challenges as the existence of zero energy buildings goes on the rise, the name being one of them.

Kmart closing 5 more Michigan stores

New air conditioner standards to yield big savings
BUILDINGS
As part of President Barack Obama's plan to cut 3 billion metric tons of carbon emissions by 2030, the Department of Energy has proposed new energy efficiency standards for commercial rooftop air conditioners, which cool about half of the total commercial floor space in the U.S. The new standards would require an energy use reduction around 30 percent for units sold starting in 2019.
