US retailers meet in Basel, Switzerland for facilities roundtable
Professional Retail Store Maintenance Association
The Professional Retail Store Maintenance Association (PRSM), the authority on retail, multi-site facilities management, recently hosted a roundtable discussion on managing facilities maintenance for retailers engaged in store operations across Europe and the rest of the world. Held in Basel, Switzerland, and hosted by PRSM Member Fossil, Inc., the Association’s most recent International Retail Exchange attracted retail facilities professionals from nine major brands, including Apple, Abercrombie & Fitch, Bose Corp., Fossil Inc., Group Europe GmbH, Dollar Financial Group, Inc., Gap, Guess? Inc., Triumph International, and Tumi. PRSM members and non-members met to share common challenges and solutions in the form of best practices in specific areas, including vendor management, lighting, co-sourcing relationships, country-specific laws and labor requirements and trades maintenance.

DSW looking at smaller stores as it continues expansion march

DSW Inc. may get bigger by being smaller. The Columbus, Ohio-based shoe retailer this fall plans to test a store format that is roughly half the size of the DSW you're used to shopping. The test stores will be around 10,000 square feet; the average DSW is 22,000 square feet.

Upbeat news about jobs and retailers helped the Standard & Poor's 500 index snap its longest losing streak of the year. U.S. unemployment claims fell close to their lowest level in six years, the government reported, and J.C. Penney and Bed Bath & Beyond delivered encouraging news.

Bed, Bath & Beyond, Inc. reported year-over-year increases in net income, net sales and same-store sales during the second quarter of fiscal 2013. Net income grew about 18 percent, to $249.3 million from $224.3 million.

Jamestown Purchases Ghirardelli Square in San Francisco
Bloomberg
Jamestown, the owner of New York's Chelsea Market, bought the retail portion of San Francisco’s Ghirardelli Square to expand its holdings of globally known U.S. properties. The purchase price was $54 million, according to a person with knowledge of the deal who asked not to be identified because the terms of the agreement are private. The shopping complex, sold by Ghirardelli Acquisition Co., has 100,394 square feet (9,327 square meters) of rentable space that are 55 percent leased, the person said.

Why Patagonia wants to sell you ratty old swim trunks

While the retail world descended on Manhattan for Fashion Week earlier this month, Patagonia, the outdoor apparel company, took out a big ad in The New York Times to pitch a nine-year-old pair of used swim trunks. "Better Than New," it read. The California-based company is selling used clothing at five of its retail stores, not far from its $700 dry suits.
