Brisk back-to-school shopping benefited many U.S. retailers in September, with strong sales growth at chains from Kohl's Corp. to Nordstrom Inc. suggesting optimism for the holiday season. Shoppers largely brushed off the prolonged economic malaise and the U.S. East Coast's recovery after Hurricane Irene. Chains with fresh items enticed shoppers while others were left to question their strategies heading into the critical winter holiday shopping season. More

California-based discount retailer Ross Dress for Less will open 12 locations in the Chicago area, marking its first entrance in to the Midwest market. o celebrate the grand openings, the stores are offering customers a chance to win $500 or $100 shopping sprees through Oct. 16 and is donating $50,000 to local chapters of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America and $10,000 to other charities. A new concept store from Nike Inc. will soon be racing after runners' dollars in New York City, sources said. The maker of athletic footwear, apparel and equipment leased 14,000 square feet at 156 Fifth Ave. to open a Nike Running store. The specialty store caters to runners by offering services and promotions beyond just selling sneakers, clothes and accessories. More

J.C. Penney targets impulse shoppers with grab-and-go stores

J.C. Penney is upping the ante on impulse holiday gifting, with plans to carve out areas on the main floor dedicated to gifts from the whimsical to the practical. The "Wrapt" shops, which will first be launched in its Manhattan, N.Y., store, followed by a national roll out in all 1,100 stores on Oct. 24, will carry about 300 items, mostly exclusive to J.C. Penney. They range from $3 chocolate candies from Dylan's Candy Bar to $40 mini speakers that plug into Apple's iPads or an iPods. More

$280M expansion continues at Canada's Guildford Town Centre

Guildford Town Centre has launched the next phase of its $280 million expansion and redevelopment project, and is seeking to become the first LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold-certified shopping mall in Canada. When construction work is completed at the end of 2013, the center's leasing area will have increased from 980,000 square feet to 1.2 million square feet, which will make it the largest regional shopping center south of the Fraser River​r. Friendly's chain files for bankruptcy

Friendly's, an ice cream parlor chain known for its Happy Ending sundaes, filed for bankruptcy as the sluggish economy and slow consumer spending claimed another casual dining operator. Friendly's Ice Cream Corp blamed rising prices for cream and high rents for its problems. The company, which operates or franchises restaurants in the eastern United States, plans to close 63 of its weaker restaurants; 424 will remain open. More

Target report a moderately better than expected 5.3 percent same-store sales increase for September that was driven by broad-based gains in all categories and geographic regions. The increase was almost entirely due to larger average transaction sizes and came on top of a prior year increase of 1.3 percent. The company also noted that customer traffic as measured by comparable-store transaction increase a little more than 1 percent. More

Arts and crafts store A.C. Moore Arts & Crafts Inc. agreed to be acquired by arts and crafts distributor Sbar's Inc. for about $40.8 million. Toys R Us said that it is expanding its layaway program starting Oct. 15 to include all toys, not just more expensive items such as swing sets and electronics. Wal-mart offers layaway again Oct. 17 for toys and electronics after stopping the program in 2006 for anything other than fine jewelry. More

Walgreens Reports 5.4 percent September Sales Rise
